It's definitely expensive, but I think it's designed (or intended) to do more than simple phone stuff--calling/texting.
There's probably 40 iPhone apps that I wouldn't mind using. I read about new, cool ones all the time. I liked the Visual Voicemail feature Jobs debuted; I dont know if that's come to market yet (I suppose it's an AT&T issue over here)?
There seems to be a lot of promising directions the iPhone can go which other phone makers (at the moment) are in the dark on...
