You mean the parties, or the people who refer to themselves as Dems or Repubs?
As far as the parties, there aren't a lot of REAL differences (IMO). The primary goal of both is to remain in and capture as much political power as possible. There isn't as much distance between our two major parties as say, the ones in Europe and other places.
And sometimes they will even work together. The two major parties worked together very well to crush any further chances that Ross Perot had in 1996. Though he had somewhat fallen out of favor, he still appealed to a good many Democrats and Republicans. Couldn't have that, now could we? By working together to marginalize United We Stand and Perot, they made sure that neither Perot nor a third party would be in a position to again (really) challenge them then, or in the near future.
I haven't supported either major party since 1992 - and I probably won't again. Before casting my vote for Obama in 2008, I'd been voting for independents and Libertarians since '92 (except for that fucked up Bush vote in 2000 :crash. Neither major party really embraces my views. Both have bits & pieces that appeal to me. But as long as the GOP is run by and/or led by kooks and flakes, that rely on wild hyperbole and half-truths (meant to rile up the backward and the unknowing, ignorant boobs and conspiracy theorists among us), I can only give them the nod on gun control and that's about it. IMO, what the GOP needs is a man like Jack Kemp to step forward. A man of wisdom and ideas. At least the Dems have enough sense not to let Nancy Pelosi, Babs Boxer, Di Feinstein or Chuckie Schumer go (too far) off the reservation when they're in front of a mic. I honestly don't care for any of those people. But the GOP is now trying to appeal to those who hang onto the every word of table pounding, rabble-rousing, (completely) mindless twits like Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann, Glen Beck and Rush Limbaugh. For the Chairman of the RNC to have to make amends to the likes of "political entertainer", Rush Limbaugh, was TOTALLY outrageous! Course, if your sister has a baby by one of the most infamous (convicted) drug dealers of the 1980's, and you didn't seem to have any (meaningful) political money UNTIL she formed some funny side businesses from his "support payments", as well as money from Mike Tyson after her divorce from him, I guess you walk on egg shells.
Considering my business, upbringing, background and my beliefs, I really should be a Republican. I'm not a Democrat, but perhaps the GOP should ask itself why people like me don't want to be associated with their party right now? Nah! Why work to get my one vote if you can get 10 votes just by hollering the word "socialism" to a mob of hayseeds?
I have a rule: if you're dumber and/or crazier than I am, I ain't votin' for ya!
Nice answer! thanx! :thefinger

Republicans want to enslave or eliminate all non-white people and shoot machine guns at oil-soaked endangered animals from their church pews.
Democrats want gay married couples to kill 9 month old fetuses before they are eligible for a birth certificate. And they want to force rich people to give minorities their stuff.
Now who wants to hear the differences between Jews and Catholics?
