what the fuck you lookin at?
War of the Worlds withTom Cruise had spectacular special effects! Maybe it was all cgi I dunno, but it looks fuckin awesome!

A bit off topic but the film "The Third Man" shot in 1946/7 shows what effects can be brought to the screen simply by imaginative and skilful photography.

no! .. ;)

I've voted for the Terminator saga. Each part was great for it's time (maybe the third is a little bit crappy but Arnold did nice job again - was more fun than action) T4 had the best sound effects, from the movies I've seen/heared so far and T2 was the reference for many years (THX-Home Cinema). Part one of course had some great sfx with the Terminator model.

The movie " My Bloody Valentine" had the best 3D visual effects I think, so this would also be candidate for me.

Most revolutionary for me is the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey", unbelieveable effects for it's time. Still wondering a little bit how they made those cool walking up the wall effects. Or the funny flying pencil in the begining (glued on a window :1orglaugh - what a great idea)

I'll show some love for the big hairy ape that has quite a affinity for Blondes.

King Kong

In 1933, that movie definately raised the bar. Especially in terms of special effects.

Best movies I would have to vote for the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Most revolutonary, the CGI work from Jurraisic Park was cutting edge when it came out is still amazing to this day. The first Matrix was a good movie, but was nothing revolutionary, CGI had been done for years, the "bullet time" sequences had already been done in Blade, and the story, like Terminator another take on a post-apocalyptic world that has been done thousands of times.

I would place Michael Bay movies over Roland Emmerich movies and that is not intended as a compliment to Michael Bay. Good movies should induce some kind of emotional response, Emmerich films are devoid of any emotion and the characters are merely props for the next explosion.

T2 had some great special effects, but the movies do not age well. The first King Kong was a great movie the two remakes were awful at best. The Star Wars films wil always hold a special place in my heart, and episodes IV - VI were simply amazing, I -III were unable to live up to predecessors. The original Alien was an awesome sci-fi movie that also scared the hell out of you. The sequels were really nothing more than action flicks living off the laurels of the original. 2001 is a classic movie and is one of my favorites of all time.

I like the use of mercury for the liquid terminator scenes in T2...They pulled of something that still looks good today and which would be done with computers now.

How about the granddaddy of all scifi films, Le Voyage dans la lune by Georges Melies? Yeah, it looks primitive now, but it is generally considered the first science fiction movie. Watching the age of science fiction evolve from this to les Vampires, The Lost World, King Kong, The Wizard of Oz, Forbidden Planet, 2001, Star Wars, An American Werewolf in London, Innerspace, Terminator 2, Twister, The Matrix, The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Avatar is quite remarkable, and will be interesting to watch it evolve further in our life times (true 3D interactive?).

I remember when I first saw King Kong in '33. I swore that there was an actual monkey at the screening. I ran out screaming all about the town and when I got home I told my ma and she said I must be some kind of communist devil for thinkin' such things. She brought the preacher man over and I got 12 lashings and had to recite 90 bible verses while standing on one foot balancing a steaming hot kettle of onion juice on my head. Served me right too
