What to do when a shirt gets torn during the trial?

Yesterday evening while trying a half sleeved shirt at the trial room, it got ripped from the arm area.I didn't do it purposefully. I just wanted something that would fit me well, but I ended up as a disaster for the poor cotton thing.
I admitted that it happened during the trail, but they said I have to pay for it.I didn't have a problem with that, but I wanna ask if that's how it should go?If the cloth rips off during the trial, is the customer liable to pay the entire money for the thing in general?Shouldn't the manufacturer be accountable for defective manufacturing?
