being that there are many more people today than in the past, its probably a recent issue, and a celebrity one.
being that I am purposly out of touch with most recent and current celebs I don't know.
I think the bo derek ones sold quite alot in the early 80's

Marilyn Monroe's issue was the first right? I'll bet that's worth a few bucks.

Really, looks to be nothing special about the issue - perhaps it was simply at the height of popularity, or perhaps there were a couple of particularly good pictures in the Sex in the Cinema take?
Hell, even some of the '60s issues with interviews with the likes of the Beatles or Malcolm X - it seems like they would have been quite popular, but it goes to show you.

I think the original question was asked in error. A single unit would be a copy. The whole printing run would be called an issue. 'What single copy sold the most' sounds like how many times did they sell that one copy.

Britney Spears said had Hugh Hefner put her in, the magazine would have sold more issues than at any other time. He turned her down on account of her weight at the time.

It probably would have, too.

I bet he regrets that. From what I read, Playboy Magazine is on the decline.
