Wether we are Liberals or conservatives, US citizens or foreigners we've all seen the famous scene in The Newsroom TV show.

My question is : How would you answer that question ?
Would you even agree that America is the greatest country in the world ? Wether or not you think it is, what makes (or doesn't make) it so ?

Who am I to say that it's the best country in the world? I just know that it's the best country for me though and I don't want to live anywhere else

It's rugged, independent spirit - we give out drivers licenses at 16 for instance and that Second Amendment of course.

We love our dogs (and not as cuisine).

Didn't Johan have a thread or a series of comments proclaiming the United States the greatest country in the world back when O-Zero was president? He offered a whole host of reasons why.

Now it's up for debate.

Classic. :1orglaugh

It used to be, but not anymore

For decades (even centuries) the US have been leading by example. They've been a living beacon of Hope and Freedom for millions of people all around the world. People came from all around the world to start a new life in America, hoping to be successful, knowing that here, they would stand a chance, that they would livre free, peacefully and that with hard work and dedication they may live the American Dream. That wether you're white, black, latino, arab, christian, jew, buddhist, hinduist, muslim or atheist you would have the same rights and that you wouldn't be discriminated against.
That was the dream, the vision that the Founding Fathers had when the country was created. But, to me, at some point, the country took the wrong road. But I still have some hope that, if the right choices were maid, the country could get back on the right track...

Yeah, all of those people came here legally.

The framers intended for them to come here legally.

But not everyone that wants to come here is entitled to come here.

We don't owe the world a living.

Jo, you are shaping your opinion without logic and a lack of facts. The founding fathers owned slaves. The Chinese that helped build the railroads were not slaves but sure as hell had their suffering. Germans, Italians, Polish, Irish were all resented upon their arrival. Although women were allowed to run for office since 1788, they didn't have the right to vote till 1920.

No one is a prophet in their own land.

In France, women acquired the right to vote (and to hold office) in 1945.
Serfdom was abolished in 1789. Slavery was abolished in 1794 but reinstated by Napoleon in 1802 to be the abolished again 1848 but only in France, no in the colonies, in which slavery was legal until 1905

So you mentioned the wrong road. What direction is this road heading into? It sounds like you have a "this event caused that" theory. Name some key events or periods that initiated USA running into the ground.
