What is the latest good film you watched ?

What's Love Got to Do with It

I enjoyed this film. It a nice comedy which the family can enjoy. It shows the insight of how a love life can be for a British Pakistani family around he idea of arranged marriages which can be a alien concept, but how it isn't as bad as people assume it to be. Film stars the beautiful Lily James and Shazad Latif, famously known as Clem Fandango in Toast of London. I find these kind of films very relatable for Asian people like myself who live in Britain. Always talk about how films like East is East, Bend it like Beckham does more for us than the usual Bollywood glamour we always get associated with. There are alot of laughs, some might be hard to understand if not part of the culture. Cast is mainly Asian but you do get some english people also like Emma Thompson.

Crime Story

Film is dated, but this is one of Jackie's well known original films before he become a international household name. There is alot of action and comedy in this film which is something he likes to keep with his films compared to full blown action

Morgan

I like these films that gives the premise of trying to play god, whether it's with robots with good AI, or messing about with nature. Kate Mara plays her part perfectly working for a tech company working on a robot who can have better response, and critical thinking skills than a human, but what if that robot becomes too advanced? Film is short but is fairly paced to pass the time. I won't call this a blockbuster though.

River

Think of this like a japanese groundhogs day when you are in a continuous loop. Film has been done very well considering the limited resourced they had with costs, cast and locations. The time loop is funny that all the loops is very different showing all kinds of elements one can experience

Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget

I like these family animation films. I remember watching the original film all those years ago, and even though this film doesn't hit much at home like the previous film did with its iconic cast, this is still a pretty good watch. I don't think any of the original cast are in this film though. I think due to the new cast, it was quite difficult to invest in some of the new characters as they didn't come across as very interesting

Thanks, this looks interesting. I'll have to track it down.

The classic 90's anime got a worthy live-action remake.

There was also a great French remake a couple years ago featuring Pamela Anderson

Strays

A live action film, one for the adults and not the kids. Film set in the dog POV. There is a brilliant cast in the film which consists of Isla Fisher, Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx all of which voice as dogs in the film. The film i would say is pretty good for animal lovers/dog lovers as it shows about cruelty and how the dog finally realises his owner was bad and never truly loved him, something which is quite true in the world we live in. There is alot of laugh out loud moments.

Heist

A heist film starring the legend Robert De Niro as the corrupt owner of a casino. Film is quite fast paced for a 90 mins film and shows how he gets his just deserts from a former member of his staff he has done wrong. Film is more like a more serious Tower Heist film where ends justify the means for 2 people who try and rob money from the casino for said causes, but the heat gets real when they have to take people hostage on a bus. There is a moment you feel for Robert De Niro in the film, but you still want to hate him.

The International

Was on a Naomi Watts binge so watched this. Film also stars Clive Owen. Film is based on the BCCI scandal of the 80's and how there is corruption with global finance impacting on politics on a global scale. There is alot of good action scenes and sequences, which don't make sense but it's an action film so it's not meant to.

The Desperate Hour

The 2nd Naomi Watts film i watched. This film i felt a bit mixed on and i believe this film was filmed during the covid pandemic. One of these reasons is cause of the very limited cast shown in the film, but the majority of the film was shot with Naomi's character going for a long run and being on and off on the phone. Saying that, it doesn't take away from her performance as she is a great actress and shows that mother bond one has for ones kids when their lives are in danger.

Project A

Some silly laughs from the legend that is Jackie Chan. Effects and action sequences may seem dated but this is from the early 80's so would look a bit naff to todays standards. You still would get the good all comedy factor element from him which we all enjoy.

National Theatre Good

A compelling performance from David Tennant as a german professor who is pulled into dangerous territory involving Nazi's during the 2nd world war. Film which is shown through the medium as a play shows his struggle and portrays how a good man can do evil.

The Young Master

Another great film from Jackie Chan from his hay day. You would think someone of Jackie's calibre would be an action star, however in the film he come across as more a secondary character even though he is the main star. The end fight scene to help bring back his honor is top notch cinema

Unhinged

When road rage takes a very sinister turn. I think we all can relate to this as we have been on the receiving and giving end to this rage on the road. This is what happens wen Russell Crowe is involved as someone who is getting late to work, flips him off, but little did she know is he is a violent man, and what pursues is like a cat and mouse game as she is running for her life, and people close to her die. I think Russell played his role as a lunatic very well. I am not familiar with the main actress work but you feel stressed for her to making sure she ends up safe from this man.

Bullet Train

Just a very fun action comedy film to watch which is mostly set in a bullet train with other assassins. Kind of like John Wick but killings can happen anywhere. Everyone who is on this train have some connection in common with everyone. You don't realise what that is till the end, so this leaves you with good suspense towards the end to find out. Film has Brad Pitt, Joey King, Aaron Taylor and some other big names in minor or cameo appearances. This is a entertaining watch for the star power alone.

The Fall Guy was excellent, obviously. Very funny. Ryan Gosling should only be allowed to do action, comedy or action-comedy from now on. The action is very good, too. Very annoying that it looks as though it's going to be a box office flop. Go and see it or you're all banned.

The Girl Who Escaped : Kara Robinson Story

Quite gripping based on a true story showing a 15 year old girl being kidnapped and living to tell the day. Unlike other film like this, this film does show alot of the film of the girl telling the story and some of the graphic dark stuff you would expect to see, you don't besides her talking about it.

Old

The story is great, enough to keep you curious. The actors were a bit random as don't recognise anyone besides Abbey Lane. What has stumped me is that there is no explanation on why the family ends up aging while going on holiday on the beach. Due to that it changes it being a brilliant film to an alright film.

Significant Other

Title can be misleading as thought it would be about demons like the Blair Witch but it's an alien film. The film kind of hit various genres like comedy, mystery, sci fi also. This film had underlining tones of love and twists just when you think you got the film figured out.

Jethica

The film was a quite slow and the majority of it, it felt a slow paced film, however in the final third it picked up pace and the premise of the story takes shape. First part i felt was alot of filler.

History Boys

A great comedy highlighting some of the current talent we are familiar with before they hit the big time. Cast include a young James Cordon, Russell Tovey and Dominic Cooper. Film has Bad Education vibes if i had to compare it to anything.

Decision to Leave

A great south korean neo romantic film where one is a cop investigating a death and the widow is a suspect, however he develops feelings for her makes you think if his judgement is in question. Great performances by all.

Wild child

Being a Emma Roberts fan thought i would give this a go and it's a great comedy on how a spoilt brat can change her life around when going to a boarding school across the pond. It's a great comedy, one to not take seriously and has a few notable names such as Emma herself and Juno Temple and the late Natasha Richardson.

Sleepless

Film is alright to pass the time as a no nonsense action thriller starring Jamie Foxx as a cop dealing with a shipment of cocaine. There is twists of corruption in this film.

The 355

What's not to like an all action led female cast of very stunning beauties from Jessica Chastain, Penelope Cruz and Diane Kruger all being international assassins from their respective countries. This is like Charlie's Angels but without the comedy element being heavily highlighted.

The Unberable Weight of Massive Talent

A great buddy comedy film with Nicholas Cage and Pedro Pascal. The film seems to portray Nicholas Cage like how his actual films have gone in real life, where he was a big shot making great films, however money got tight and he ended up doing mediocre films. There is alot of incarnations of Cage from what we use to see him as down the years, which adds to the comedy. Add Pedro to the mix as his superfan and you are in for something as the interactions off them, they seem to bounce off each other very well

Simultant

Film was alright maybe not brilliant. Set in the future about humanoid helping to get rid of ones thoughts and a government wanting to stop that from happening. Cast includes the sexy Jordana Brewster and Robbie Amell as the main leads as wife and a AI version of her husband. It has alot of themes behind it where one is deceased, the family can have some form of replica AI version of them in their lives, and how this can be some form of norm in a futuristic reality.

Dog

A comedy drama starring Channing Tatum. The film has its funny parts but it has more of a drama Prescence where he and a fellow ranger try to get to a dead soldiers funeral on time. Film is more about the journey than the destination where both the dog and Channing hate each other and drive each other crazy along the way, but they warm up to each other towards the end.

Some other woman

Film is alright, feels flawed but one has to try and throw that out the window. There basically 2 stories in the film, told from 2 different female viewpoints with the same friends and husband which why it felt strange. You kind of watch this and figure out who is the real woman and who is the imposter, is it the one you see from the start and what the film would want you to think, or the other woman you see later as the film progresses.

My Big fat greek wedding 3

Like alot of trilogies, you find the 1st film brilliant and the ones that follow, not so brilliant. This is the same thing. Film is good viewing if you are into the franchise but didn't quite hit home like the first film. It has a good cast, and alot of the originals are in aswell as new people who i don't recognise

No. You need to have watched Fury Road. Which you should have done by now. As should everyone. What are you doing with your lives!

Dune 2, but only because I read the book again(s), a month ago.
(They skimp on harkonnen politics and the result is an unbalanced story without the refresher. The ending isnt anything special without knowledge of the upcoming massacres)

Next up: ALlied 2016, Arcadian 2024, Damsel 2024 (Spillie for Millie), Fall Guy with Steve-FreeOnes and Last of the Mohicans 1992

Baby Done

A New Zealand comedy starring Rose Matafeo. It is a light hearted comedy which leaves a smile on ones face. The chemistry between the two leads as new parents helps to make this a decent watch to pass the time

Dirty God

A very gripping and powerful film where the lead actress allows herself to not let her appearance by disfigurement define her as she tries to lead a simple teenage life without much help and support. Quite touching and emotional in alot of places as this can be a real occurrence for many.

The Estate

A serious comedy drama which includes Anna Faris and Toni Collette about a family member dying and how two sisters try to win the estate. There is a funny twist of an ending to this, but this just shows how in real life, how such matters tear families apart and how greed can corrupt them. Film is quite serious in places so this is not one of those laugh out loud comedies.

The 1984 Dune movie is better than these new Dune 1 and Dune 2 movies.
There's a better fan edit version of the 1984 Dune movie with an extra 50 minutes of deleted scenes and drawings intro explaining the history timeline.

The performances by the cast in the new Dune films were bland and the characters lacked dept.
I must have dozed off when Dr. Liet-Kynes first appeared because for a while I didn't know who she was. In the books she is a white male.
In adapting the novel, the filmmakers overlooked an opportunity to reimagine Paul Atreides' ability to endure the Water of Life. They could have portrayed him/her as a hermaphrodite – an individual embodying both male and female traits, that would have been a better interpretation of how he/she survived drinking the Water of Life.
But it's just a movie, and since it's sci-fi I still enjoyed watching it, but not as much as the 1984 version.

Paul Atreides' unique genetic makeup, having both male and female DNA, is discussed in Frank Herbert's second novel of the Dune series, "Dune Messiah" (1969). In this novel, it is revealed that Paul, as the Kwisatz Haderach, possesses the genetic memories of both his male and female ancestors. This unique ability grants him prescience and sets him apart from the all-female Bene Gesserit, who can only access their female genetic memories due to the lack of a Y chromosome. The Bene Gesserit had been manipulating bloodlines across centuries to engineer the arrival of the Kwisatz Haderach, and Paul's unique genetic makeup is a central theme in the novel.
