What did you think it would be like?

Er, not the first time you had sex.

Sheesh you guys and your one track minds.

When I was young, I never needed anyone, and making love was just for fun, those days are gone,

seriously when I was younger I thought the year 2000 would be AWESOME.

Actually 2000 looked far away.

Although I didn't express it as such, somewhere in the deep dark recesses of what used to be a mind I thought people would likely be wearing silver one piece suits.

I figured we would be flying much instead of crawling along the ground.

I thought we would be happy, well fed, that Man would occupy space, that there would be a lot of fancy gadgets, cities would be full of tall, amazing buildings with sky walks around, lots of jobs, that economic problems would be mostly solved, most everyone would be incredibly intelligent and well educated, we would be living under the ocean, no more war, heck it just looked bright and sparkly, full of wondrous technology.

Now, reality check. The fanciest gadgets around are the cellphones people like Paris Hilton can afford, the biggest thing in recent times is who released what sex tape, nothing has been done about the ghettos, porn is replaced by webcams, we still don't have nice puppy robots to entertain our children, people are more ignorant than ever, there are not that many good films, clothing looks bloody awful, we MIGHT have a cure for the common cold, people worry about cancer every day, we may all die a horrible death any day now, we might never get to the moon unless someone invents some amazing way of getting there, we haven't met any aliens apart from the suffering illegal ones, deserts are encroaching on our lives, pure water is scarce, food is even more scarce, and oh look, the Middle East conflict is ready to erupt, still, all over an area (the West Bank), 5 860 sq km in size, an area that can fit into New York New York at its 141 299 sq km, 23 times over.

So, what were your thoughts, expectations, hopes, dreams visions for the future?

We are long past the year 2000. Not that long, only 10 years ago, but it seems awful long ago, doesn't it?

Can anyone even think of some amazing thing that has happened in recent times, something worth posting? Paper thin TV? Robot breakthroughs? Educational advances? Stress free life?

Disposable nappies have been around for the longest time, so maybe something more recent. Just saying.

Backwards in coming forwards?

i'm still waiting for one of those "play back" machines in Strange Days . there was another thing like that in Minority Report only it wasnt portable. i'd prefer the portable one. can someone please get to work on that?

Or 'Masters of the Universe', where one can see what happened. That would put a crimp in crime. Just make all anti- devices illegal.

Well, standards of living are higher. Let's face it, the world could be a paradise for everyone. There is hope, though.

Whereas before it was 'someday we will...' now it's I wonder if we will read about this or that soon. Like, I wonder if we will be winging our way to Mars by the end of 2010 or so.

All the utopia ideas aren't going to happen for a long time. All but the most altruistic of people, even if a lot of them won't admit it to themselves, are very greedy and selfish. Some people out there are very bad in that respect while actively trying to fool themselves and rationalizing why they aren't. To have a nice world would at some point mean people might have to sacrifice for a little while, do things that don't necessarily benefit themselves for the greater good, and recognize that they just can't have all they want for themselves. Humans have just never been a sharing creature, whether it be wealth, land, or power, and that's one of the biggest reasons the world is such a crappy place and will remain so.

I will go one step further. Even if someday we do get the technology that is shown in fictional stories, like in Star Trek for example, it will still be a very long time before any utopia comes about because even if we had the ability for it to come about, there would be people that would want to keep people from something that was even plentiful because that would mean others would have almost as much as they would have and they wouldn’t like that.

When I was younger I thought that by this time there would either be total world peace or just the opposite, some nuclear winter where most of us would be contaminated by radiation. As a kid, that thought scared me to death. I grew up in the eighties so Cold War talk and films like ''The Day After'' really scared me. I also thought/hoped that governments would work together to further mankind similar to how it is described in Star Trek The Next Generation (I know, I know). That and the cool shit they had in Back To The Future II. I guess I was heavily influenced by television and films.

I'm no Hemingway or Edgar Alan Poe.

It just popped into me head.

Often if I get an idea for a thread, if I leave it, I find someone else posts the same thought a few days later, so I have to scribble it all down before thinking it through. Then again one doesn't want to think about stuff too much. That's what I do. Drive myself nuts sometimes, and anyone who is around me for too long.
