Maybe with no internet and actual VHS sales they had proper budgets.

Some things were better in the old days and some things are better now. I like the technology they have now. Porn is a lot more accessable now. You don't have to hang around with a bunch of trench coated pervs in the back of a video store. Now days the videos are clearer, the lighting and sound are much better, and the internet allows us to find a ton of different things.

The technology to make and deliver it is better now. The problem is actual substance of it definitely isn't. Just like the sex might be "nastier" now, but that doesn't make it good. In fact I think it's just turned sex into a joke. I don't know, in a way I think the old slightly grainier stuff back in the 80s and 90s was still more well done. The technology wasn't as good but the people knew how to use what they had better, and while they weren't masters of cinema by any stretch of the imagination the artistic direction they did have was still much better and more thought out. Now the producers of porn use technology as a crutch to have talentless hacks put out something to cover their inadequacies and incompetence.

They might get to the sex faster, but the make so many scenes so long time with mindless repetition I wouldn't be surprised if people skip over more than half of the actual sex now and not just all the non sex parts. In that way it's worse. Plus, with the medium they have today skipping over parts isn't like what it used to be. People don't have to spend half an hour fast forwarding. Now they can just click a mouse and have the spot come up instantly if that's what they want.

People that want a little bit of a setup can't get it, let along the eroticness I mentioned earlier. (I'm talking about a real setup not that stupid stuff most gonzo crap uses.) However, people that don't care can easily skip over it so it doesn't really effect them. The people that don't like junk get screwed now.

As far as the performers are concerned, there is a reason why there are a large number of them from the past that are still well regarded and thought of today. While there will be some adult models active around this time that will be remembered well into the future, as for the pornstars, nearly all the "stars" of today, they won't have anybody giving a shit about them in 10 or 20 years, let along having people remembering who the hell they are. They will just be some abandoned memory in a computer out in the corner of a garage or on some meaningless DVD in a middle of a landfill. My first memories of seeing porn were the old 80s numbes and on alot of levels I prefer them to some of the modern crap. Back then it was just people having sex (albeit more graphic than in your own bedroom) but it was just two (or more) people enjoyng themselves and one another.
