Volkswagen's $600 Car - 258 mpg

If everyone drove one of these then it wouldn't be so bad but here in Alberta it's truck country and I had a Yaris a while back and that was dwarfed by the big ass trucks so there's no way in hell you'd catch me driving that thing.

How cute...

I wouldn't want to drive one of those things, but I have to admit it'd be fun to try one out. Assuming I can fit in one, of course. Those Chinese are short, after all.

what the fuck you lookin at?
god that thing is hideous. BUT...for 285 mpg I might consider it...

How can they sell a car made from carbon fibre for $600? Sounds like BS to me.
Besides, if I want to get somewhere with no passengers and using little fuel, I'd sooner use two wheels

the thing that makes carbon fiber expensive is the molds, if it goes into mass production i can see it's manufacturing the cars can get pretty cheap, since they already got the aero design so there won't be any changes made after the fact, like with race cars, they make so many changes and each change usually requires a new mold for the carbon fiber, and reducing the number of molds the cheaper it gets, and if they make the molding process automated (unlike race car manufacturing) they can cut costs even more

Mileage sounds great, but I see that thing getting squashed by an SUV or Pick-up truck! It looks like a Power Wheels toy!
And how the hell do you fit in it?! looks like my wife couldn't take her purse in that thing!!!

It will take people to loose the concept of their self esteem is directly connected with their car, and that driving a SUV makes you a man.

Once the oil prices start to go up and up, people will learn fast whats smart and whats not

It's one of the ugliest vehicles I've seen, but if in reality it sells for $600, and gets 400+ miles on one tank of gas, I'd most definitely get one for a daily driver. That would make it more economical to drive a powerful, fun car when I want to go drive for the thrill of driving, for those of us who can only afford one car.

Where would you drive it? Your backyard? A bumper car pin? That's not a car but a coffin in waiting. I suppose the upside is you wouldn't need to pay for a casket.

For a commuter car the mpg would be awesome, but if you got hit you would be fucked. If they could make it bigger and sacrifice some mpg I would think about it.
Hopefully the American auto companies follow suit.

The one and only.
Sure, I'd get one. I've always wanted a car that I could pick up and move if it got stuck in the snow...

The MPG is great and the price is cheap, but that's really the only good thing about the car. With no passenger seat and no room for cargo there really isn't much use for the thing other than driving to work.

It's not a bad idea, but I think it's still looking in the wrong direction. The real money and design needs to be invested in better public transportation which would really be the most fuel efficient and free up congested traffic lines for better space use, and take care of the problems that I mentioned previously.

The only real drawback is that people would have to get over their claustrophilia and get used to the idea of actually having to inhabit space and interact with other human beings! Where does this need for "personal space" so that you want to seal yourself into a hermetic box (as exampled perfectly in this car design) come from? It's really only been in the last 50 years or so that people acted that way and weren't used to an environment of being around groups of people.
