If I want to open something in a new window, I simply right click & choose open in a new window from the options...

If I'm clicking on a link I prefer a new window if for no other reason than my connection speed is so slow that if something happens and the page stalls out or it just takes a long time I can close the screen and go back to the page I was at quickly. If it does it in the same window then not only do I not get the page I clicked on I potentially have to wait for the page I was on previously to reload and go though the same problems itself.
