Close call but I gotta go with Van Hagar. I Can't Drive 55 puts him over the top in my book.

If you are asking as a solo act then there is no question I have to go with Hagar. But if you asking about Van Halen then I have to go with David Lee Roth they was just a different feel and sound to them with him as lead singer.

If you are talking lead singer for Van Halen alone, then it's Diamond Dave. If you are talking career, Sammy was with Montrose, had done well solo, and did well with Van Halen.

Musically, they were much better and a lot more flexible with Sammy. Sammy was also a much better singer. Dave was much better as the "Front Man" of a rock band.

Roth was cool up until about 1986 and then he went full retard or something. Something happens to uber cool cats early on. It's like they are blessed with it then it fizzles out and they become super geeks. Kinda like what happened to Elvis.

Hagar is definitely the better musician but I preferred the DLR era Van Halen

DLR ...I stopped following them after he left..Hagar is extremely talented, but to me they were no longer the same band that opened for Sabbath after DLR left,,,although i did like sabbath with Dio though.

Do not deny what David contributed to Van Halen. But when the time came, David was not the entire band. He could be replaced and was done so with success.

Sammy.

Better songwriter, better voice, can actually PLAY an instrument, and bottom line.....better chart success with Sam.

Even back then I know with marketing the way it 's it wouldn't have been possible, and I know it would have just been cosmetic, but I wished they would have just called the band something else after the change. That way each thing could of been a seen and judged more independently by history.

I'm not the biggest Van Halen so I'm split.Musically,I like the Roth stuff much better, but on a personal level he's a nutcase. Not that that should really matter, but I was listening to Hagar on Adam Carolla's podcast one day,and that guys just seems like the coolest dude in the world, even if I don't really like his music.

The thing that pissed me off about when DLR was in the band was all the fucking 50s and 60s cover songs they did. That band was fantastic and DLR wanted them to doo-wap. Gimme Van Hagar. I kknow DLR was fantastic frontman and personified the VH image to a tee, but I don't want to be Dancin' In the Streets.

I remember seeing David Lee Roth after Van Halen split...........tickets were cheap and the band including David Lee Roth were very disappointing. Talk about an off night. It was terrible. Was hoping for some Van Halen theme but didn't get any. Yea, i agree with the sound of Van Halen between the two singers.
