I'm against capital punishment, except for a limited amount of circumstances that no longer exist in the modern world. About the only thing I can say for it is that while I'm sure it leaves quite a mess that isn't pleasant to look at death by firing squad is probably a very quick death. Out of all the means of executing somebody it's probably one of the more humane ones. Not that execution and humane really go together.

I think you are argueing the wrong way, Conservatives are won over by profit.

So if there is proof that death penalty wastes a lot of money, that is the catch.

every few years there's a story like this about a killer requesting an old method of killing like hanging or firing squad...what this is really testament to is how fucking hard it is to get old laws of the books...it always ends up being easier to stop enforcing them rather than to remove them

Wow, Utah is doing a wonderful job impersonating a Communist regime and the Nazis. And to so much applause in this thread...is that troubling?

Utah threw out the firing squad as a death penalty option a few years ago, however, those that choose it before it was thrown out are grandfathered in. If they still want to go that way, that is.

The judge asked the guy if this is still his choosen method and he said yes so his wishes are being honored.

I was expecting to flinch but didn't as I watched his execution from the witness room.
It was so quick that for a split-second I wondered if it had actually happened.
There was no blood splattered across the white cinderblock wall at the Utah State Prison. No audible sounds from the condemned. I couldn't see his eyes. I never saw the guns and didn't hear the countdown to the trigger-pull.
A twice-convicted killer who had a troubled upbringing, the 49-year-old Gardner was executed by firing squad shortly after midnight on Friday. I was one of nine journalists selected to observe his death.
