Condemned Utah killer will face firing squad
By JENNIFER DOBNER (AP) – 20 hours ago
SALT LAKE CITY — Utah is set to execute a convicted killer by firing squad in June after a judge agreed Friday to the inmate's request for the method, renewing a debate over what critics see as an antiquated, Old West-style of justice.
Ronnie Lee Gardner, 49, was given the choice of being killed by lethal injection or shot by a five-man team of executioners firing from a set of matched rifles, a rarely used relic that harkens back to Utah's territorial history.
"I would like the firing squad, please," Gardner told State court Judge Robin Reese Friday morning, after Reese told him his avenues for appeal appear to be exhausted.
Gardner was sentenced to death for killing an attorney 25 years ago during a failed escape attempt and shootout.
Of the 35 states with the death penalty on the books, Utah is the only one to use the firing squad as a method of execution since the U.S. Supreme Court reinstated capital punishment in 1976.

Leave it to the government to employ five people for a one man job.

What do they do load only four ? and ''xxx'' the fifth ? :D

heads or tails gentlemen . . call it in the air

that's exactly how it works. 5 guns but one has a blank cartridge. that way, none of the shooters can be certain it was he who killed somebody.

more states should have this though. why do we coddle murderers and rapists and make their deaths as painless as possible? how is that justice?

There's a difference between justice & revenge. What about if an innocent man/woman is killed by the death penalty?
Yay! Another death penalty debate! :nanner:

We might like the idea of making their last few moments on earth as excruciating as possible, but when we play their game, we become no better than they were when they took a life.

Bullshit! Some of these people are monsters. They are mistakes of nature. It is no different than putting down a vicious dog.

Yup. It's pretty dumb...in case anybody's wondering, the blank round is used so that the shooters never know for certain that they killed a man.

Stupid and unnecessary, considering that the unmanned automatic "firing squad" was invented over a hundred years ago.

Before the discovery of DNA I might have agreed with you, but today juries are less likely to convict and support the death penalty without it. Oh by the way, according to Jerry Springer DNA is like 99.99% accurate. Ultimately, without consequences people are less likely to restrain their actions.

what the fuck you lookin at?
I would pick firing squad too. But I'd require it be done execution style. On my knees with the barrel pressed firmly against the back of my head.

Ultimate badass way to go.

Wow, Utah is doing a wonderful job impersonating a Communist regime and the Nazis. And to so much applause in this thread...is that troubling?

Oh well if Jerry Springer says so!
DNA is not the magic bullet everyone thinks it is, & that's not taking into account all the miscarriages of justice, planting of evidence & general fucking incompetence of the police . .

Wow, that's a stretch. Did the Nazis and Communists not also send some criminals to prisons? Because we do that too!!

I'm against the death penalty, but damn the Nazi comparison is weak.

the wrong person is not accused, sentenced and executed as often as you make it seem. that's a 1 in a million scenario
