So I had a disagreement with a friend the other day over the procedure of using the penny tray.

I believe it is commonly accepted that the customer may take a penny from the tray is needed...up to 3 pennies if really needed.

However, my friend is of the mind that the penny tray is used only at the discretion of the cashier working the register. So only if it is in the best interest of the cashier to make change easier, then they may take a penny out and give less coins back to the customer.

Also if you use a penny, do you make a point to leave one some where else?

So what is correct penny tray etiquette?

Dumb topic I know, but the argument ranked up to the likes of the right way to put toilet paper on the paper dispenser. :fight:

The correct usage is it easier for BOTH you and the cashier to make and give change. when i was working as a resturant manager if the customer change came to 2.23, i would take 2 penniers out and make it 2.25. Same goes for the guest, they may take out as much as they like to make correct or even change.

I've always left it up to the cashier. I don't mind getting change back. It all ends up in my cup holder anyway. I've definitely left a lot more pennies than I've taken. In fact, have two more. :2 cents:

Normally if you need a penny the cashier will take it themselves, but if you want to too, then you can. After all, the "take a penny, leave a penny" sign is facing you, not the cashier.

"Need a penny? Take a penny. Have a penny? Leave a penny."

Pretty much sums it up....

Penny tray? Not known in the UK? Would one of my American cousin's care to elaborate?

Cousin? You're my brother by another mother...

When you enter a gas (petrol) station, there is a tray to leave a penny or take a penny depending on your needs. If you are a couple short, take a couple form the tray. If you receive a few in change, leave them in the tray for the next weary traveler. It's commonly held that three is the maximum you may take at a time. The system is basically a way for everyone to have exact change and not have to carry around pennies (which are annoying and nearly worthless). I hope that clears it up. :wave2:

^^^^^^what he said

Since pennies (one American cent which is 1/100th of a dollar) are generally considered to be nearly worthless yet cash register receipts need to be balanced with what's in the till, in American retail establishments there is frequently a "penny tray" that can be used to round off monies owed, usually to the nearest nickel.

Example: I buy a coke and a candy bar and the bill is $1.77. I can give the clerk one dollar and 3 quarters (making $1.75) and take 2 pennies from the penny tray to make up the difference. Likewise, If the customer gets change back that includes a few pennies, it is generally appreciated by the clerk to see you toss the pennies into the penny tray.

Quite a few petrol stations in England use penny trays. I'VE SEEN THEM WITH MY OWN THREE EYES!

do you make a point to leave one some where else?

Yes. On the floor. Where they belong.
