Police seeking driver who killed USC student
1:16 PM | March 30, 2009
Los Angeles police today sought the public's help in finding the man who killed an 18-year-old USC student and injured another student in a hit-and-run near campus.
During an LAPD news conference organized to enlist the public's assistance, the mother of victim Adrianna Bachan squeezed the hand of LAPD Deputy Chief Kirk Albanese and asked: "Do you have children? Think if they died! Think if they died!"
Albanese offered his condolences to Carmen Bachan, then went to a podium set up at the edge of campus and asked the public for help in finding her daughter's killer.
Bachan was killed about 3 a.m. Sunday as she walked to campus from a fraternity or sorority gathering, police said. A man driving a black sedan ran a red light and struck Bachan and Marcus Garfinkle, a 19-year-old student from Scottsdale, Ariz., as they walked in a crosswalk on Jefferson Boulevard at Hoover Street.
The driver kept going as Bachan was thrown to the side of the road and Garfinkle was carried on the windshield for about 500 feet until the driver stopped, police said. A passenger got out and threw Garfinkle to the ground before they sped away, heading east.
Bachan died at a hospital, and Garfinkle was in serious but stable condition today, authorities said.
"We need to find the vehicle," Albanese said in the news conference. "We need to find it quickly."
Police said the black sedan may have been a Lexus, Honda Accord or Toyota Corolla. There is probably extensive damage to the front of the car, and the front windshield is cracked.
Albanese said officers have begun canvassing auto body repair shops to find cars matching the description.
At the news conference, Carmen Bachan held up pictures of her daughter, including one showing Adrianna at her high school graduation and another of Adrianna and her older sister.
"Please," Carmen Bachan pleaded, "if anybody knows anything, I want them to help me."
The daughter of a Croatian father and Cuban mother, Adrianna Bachan was born in Los Angeles but grew up in Montecito and went to Santa Barbara High School, Carmen Bachan said. She said her daughter was an honor student and played soccer for the school's team.
Adrianna Bachan, who was a freshman at USC, also played soccer on a club team there, family members said.
"I don't know how we're going to live after this," Adrianna Bachan's 77-year-old grandmother, Nery Tomé, said in Spanish.
Kelly Wirht, chapter president of Bachan's sorority, Pi Beta Phi, said in a written statement that everyone in the house "is saddened at the tragic loss of its sister."
"Adrianna was both an amazing woman and an outstanding member of our chapter," she said in the statement. "She will be greatly missed."
