Police seeking driver who killed USC student
1:16 PM | March 30, 2009

Los Angeles police today sought the public's help in finding the man who killed an 18-year-old USC student and injured another student in a hit-and-run near campus.

During an LAPD news conference organized to enlist the public's assistance, the mother of victim Adrianna Bachan squeezed the hand of LAPD Deputy Chief Kirk Albanese and asked: "Do you have children? Think if they died! Think if they died!"

Albanese offered his condolences to Carmen Bachan, then went to a podium set up at the edge of campus and asked the public for help in finding her daughter's killer.

Bachan was killed about 3 a.m. Sunday as she walked to campus from a fraternity or sorority gathering, police said. A man driving a black sedan ran a red light and struck Bachan and Marcus Garfinkle, a 19-year-old student from Scottsdale, Ariz., as they walked in a crosswalk on Jefferson Boulevard at Hoover Street.

The driver kept going as Bachan was thrown to the side of the road and Garfinkle was carried on the windshield for about 500 feet until the driver stopped, police said. A passenger got out and threw Garfinkle to the ground before they sped away, heading east.

Bachan died at a hospital, and Garfinkle was in serious but stable condition today, authorities said.

"We need to find the vehicle," Albanese said in the news conference. "We need to find it quickly."

Police said the black sedan may have been a Lexus, Honda Accord or Toyota Corolla. There is probably extensive damage to the front of the car, and the front windshield is cracked.

Albanese said officers have begun canvassing auto body repair shops to find cars matching the description.

At the news conference, Carmen Bachan held up pictures of her daughter, including one showing Adrianna at her high school graduation and another of Adrianna and her older sister.

"Please," Carmen Bachan pleaded, "if anybody knows anything, I want them to help me."

The daughter of a Croatian father and Cuban mother, Adrianna Bachan was born in Los Angeles but grew up in Montecito and went to Santa Barbara High School, Carmen Bachan said. She said her daughter was an honor student and played soccer for the school's team.

Adrianna Bachan, who was a freshman at USC, also played soccer on a club team there, family members said.

"I don't know how we're going to live after this," Adrianna Bachan's 77-year-old grandmother, Nery Tomé, said in Spanish.

Kelly Wirht, chapter president of Bachan's sorority, Pi Beta Phi, said in a written statement that everyone in the house "is saddened at the tragic loss of its sister."

"Adrianna was both an amazing woman and an outstanding member of our chapter," she said in the statement. "She will be greatly missed."

*shakes head* :(

Someone got out......threw the guy off of the car......and they drove off? If and when they find these people, there needs to be no mercy shown towards the driver AND passenger.......fuck......

I can't even imagine driving off after something like that. I did a hit and run once, but it was a car that was parked on the side of a road, and there was no one in it. Yeah, you're gonna get rolled for what you did......but you are already fucked.....man up, stay at the scene, and deal with it.

My condolences and heart go out to that family......she sounds like a beautiful young woman.......

The person thrown off the car was a male friend. He is alive but in the hospital with serious injuries. Living in Los Angeles, I have been at that USC intersection before. In fact, I drove by there today and it is in deed a busy intersection. It is one of the entrances into USC, and I fail to understand how there are a limited amount of witnesses.

Mother pleads for help
Bachan's mother stood near the crosswalk Monday screaming at passers-by for help in solving the crime. "Please if you saw my daughter being killed, please help me," Carmen Bachan shouted.

She said her daughter graduated last year from Santa Barbara High School, where she was a 4.0 honor student.

"I begged her not to come here because it's a very dangerous university, I told my baby not to come here," the anguished mother said.

John Thomas, assistant chief of the USC Department of Public Safety, said crime has declined in recent years around the university, which is southwest of downtown near Exposition Park and Memorial Coliseum.

I read this on msnbc.com...

"These incidents give the perception this is a bad and violent place to live, but it's gotten much better," he said.

It's so sad to see a beautiful young woman killed so senselessly. I hope whoever's responsible for such brutal crime will be caught and spent rest of their life in prison.

What does her beauty have anything to do with the tragedy?

Hello Sexy girl how your Toes doing?
This story is very hard to stomach. its disgusting. how can a person, both or all of the people in that car live with the guilt of such a cowardly fucked up inhumane act of selfishness and disregard for others lives?.

I think if those shitbags are not found via a witness or by somebody who knows it happened.

I think the Nightmares and guilty conscious will haunt them until one of them rolls on the other. or they turn themselves in.:cussing:

Its one thing to flee after you've hit somebody. thats cowardly and unmerciful in itself, but too be as brazen as that and then have the audacity to exit the vehicle and drag the victim off the car and throw em' too the ground is unfuckinbelievable. I hope they (the guilty get life sentence's.)

RIP to Adrianna Bachan :angels: and best wishes to Marcus Garfinkle. I would like too send my condolence's to all the family and friends of both Adrianna and Marcus. this is a real tragedy. :(:crying:

Is negligence worse than intentional?

I cant bare to hear that girl's poor mother cry anymore. I too just shake my head and wonder why?

What kind of world do we live in where people just drive away?

This is beyond negligent.

It wouldn't surprise me if the assholes who did this are illegal and bolted out of town, but you never know. Since the LA PD is on the hunt, we will soon find out who are these lowlifes punks who did this senseless crime.

Very sad story.

Nothing, but that doesn't mean I can't acknowledge that in my post can I?

You can say whatever you want in your posts. I just find it kind of odd that you focus on how she looks, saying that it's sad that this happened to "such a beautiful woman".

If it was an attractive man, would you have said it is such a shame for this to happen to "such an attractive man?"

:dunno:

I just read this story about 5 minutes before I saw it on here. I....honestly don't know what to say. No wonder people have trouble believing in God while pieces of shit like that driver are allowed to live.

When the asses that did this get arrested... the punishment should fit the crime.

Make them face getting hit by a car.

If they survive, then the victims and families get the option to call for a coin toss...

tails, they are left there to rot....

heads, a .45 to the temple.

If I had to guess the guilty perp is a drunken fraternity member. I don't place much stock in the LAPD's chances of finding the perp and the car. LA is a huge place. Although if the perp is a drunkard than perhaps he wasn't sober enough to remember or think about stashing his vehicle, so maybe the LAPD will collar this clown.

It's unlikely that it's some random dude or gangster rolling around this intersection at 3AM..

I think she's very beautiful, too. That adds to the bitterness. I'm not sure there are truly many uglies at 18. People begin their prime beauty period at 18...

My thoughts exactly. but yeah people won't face it. things like this wouldn't happen if there were one IMHO. :nono::mad::dunno:

I am definitely thinking the same way as you do. I am not one for saying oh good those shit stains are caught that shit isn't good enough for the shitbags responsible for this. Infact if it weren't one of the MALE family members of the Bachan family I would happily volunteer too SPLATTER THOSE SHITHEADS BRAINS IN THE NAME OF ADRIANNA AND MARCUS. :yesyes::mad::thefinger

Absolutely!!!! It's not about revenge, it's about justice. Plain and simple. It's like that mom that burned her daughter's rapist(I think) a couple months ago. It's not revenge. Revenge is getting even. It's pure and simple justice. The legal system will probably fail the girl that got killed and her family. If that's the case, kill the fucker who did this. That is justice.

You're right on the money with that. But, don't forget one thing: you need a God that actually gives a shit and knows what true justice is.
