How can complete and utter morons as these people obviously are rise to positions of such high esteem? It's ridiculous.

I'm not a fan of the Harry Potter series and I don't really care about J.K Rowling not getting an award , but come on. Promoting sorcery!?! :1orglaugh First of all, we're still living in the 21st century right? We haven't traveled back to the dark ages and I just didn't notice. What kind of person actually believe sorcery is an act that should be feared in this day in age. It would be hilarious if these weren't the people making policy decisions.

sorcery = weapons of mass destruction

Can I just ask the obvious questions - why would JK Rowling be deserving or even considered for such an award anyways? Sorry but I just can't get too riled up over an average-at-best writer not being awarded a medal for outstanding civil service.

I thoroughly detest the Bush administration and it's policies/views but sometimes I think these tell all authors really going digging to try and find something sensational. Maybe Bush or somebody in the administration said they didn't like the books because they were about witchcraft, but I can't honestly believe there was ever a real consideration to give JK this award that was denied.

I have to agree with everything Rekrul said-while I applaud the books for getting kids to read I don't think we need to give an honor of this type to her at this time.

Are they trying to compare JK Rowling(Harry Potter) to John Steinbeck(of mice and men and Grapes of Wrath) and Harper Lee(To Kill a Mockingbird).

I would not consider Harry Potter a great book at all.

^^Somewhat I agree; probably the popularity - box office receipts - of the film has defined the popularity of the book. That's what I notice.

It's a popular book for tweens but not a great work of non-fiction such as Twain, Steinbeck, Lee etc....

It most certainly turned me into witchcraft. I don’t know how many times I waved my magic wand at an average looking woman trying to turn her in a hot princess, to no avail.

It's a good think every other piece of fiction besides hers involves nothing more than everyday people doing mundane everyday things. Otherwise people will be all manner of murderers, drug dealers, vigilantes, demons, zombies, super villains with weird powers, and mean martial arts masters just because they look at those things. They might even build those giant attack robots, and it will all be because of those awful stories.

I'm guessing we are all agreed on the lunacy of using witchcraft as a reason to disbar an award. The fact that this decision was taken in the 21st century amongst the advisors to a man who has the power to destroy civilization as we know it should be a cause for some concern. If witchcraft is out there lurking as a potential problem, wouldn't the prudent thing be to appoint a witchfinder general? (Sarah Palin, where are you when your country needs you?)

With regard to Ms Rowling I am reminded of something Gore Vidal said about the age of great writing requiring an age of great reading. Take away the great readers and you will lose the great writers. They will all be knocking out screenplays instead. Harry Potter, more than any other book, turned and continues to turn on a whole generation of children onto the act of reading for pleasure. If this only becomes a lifetime habit for a fraction of her audience then JK Rowling has performed an immesurable service for a legion of writers and has helped kick up the national average IQ by half a click.

Give her the award already.

Guess these idiots never had to read Lovecraft in high school or college. God knows what they'd think if they knew of my green tentacled friend. :1orglaugh
