That game reminds me of a pre-season-tournier at a hobby soccer league my team played in in the nineties.
It was saturday and sunday, and of our team, only a third showed up. We had no coach, but me and a buddy did kind of handle things and the others were happy they could blame us when things turned out bad, as people like it ^^
So we were 6 guys, and the other teams all had the needed 11 players, plus a handful of reserve players.
We had a little talk and decided: Not playing would be an embarassment, and ultimately, playing is not about winning, it is going on the field and give it your best shot. Everybody can play with 4 guys to replace him when things get hard, but few can go through a storm and weather it, getting a beating but walk off afterwards with your head high.
We did that those two days, got really ugly results, but the crowd cheered for us as we kept up our game and still tried to score a goal, even when we had gotten some six goals against us.
And believe me, when we made that single goal, the place went crazy.
This is what makes the difference between those who think they failed when they did not win and those who can win while losing.
