WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Death rates from cancer continue to fall in the United States, dropping more than 2 percent per year from 2002 through 2004, cancer experts reported on Monday.

They found important declines in deaths from lung, prostate and colorectal cancers in men, as well as in breast and colon cancer among women. Lung cancer deaths were still on the rise among women but this increase slowed, according to the report.

Let's hope they keep trying to find cures and not sit on their asses. You all know they don't try as hard seeing as though insurance companies still make money off these people. It's a shame, really.

Great news. I don't have the time to read the whole story right now. I would venture to think educating on the importance of early detection is the biggest factor. Since several of the types SH quoted are very treatable in the early stages.

Truly great news and I look forward to the day that a cure is announced as being the GREATEST news.

Very true. I think you hit the nail on the head LL. Colonoscopies, prostate exams. Decreased rates of smoking. These are all good things. I agree with free in hoping this is not a statistical "blip".

less deaths is a good thing, but just think about all the money that has been spent on it

Believe you me, the are really trying. Most of us have lost close friends and relatives through it and many of us are going to get it later anyway. There is an enormous incentive to find a cure and the successful team can write their own cheques.
Insurance companies don't make money from paying out, they make it from taking premiums and not paying out.How does suppressing a cure improve things for them? And insurance companies are run by people like you and me, often with loved ones suffering from the disease. Why would they want them not to get better?

I don't know how is this possible when I keep meeting people or people close to me getting diagnose with some type of cancer and in five years or so "puff" they are gone forever.

Aww, that's a shame. Cancer was doing so well.

We should wheel out the conspiracy theory that the government, and these so-called "Cancer experts" actually have the cure for cancer in a lab, but they're waiting for all of the ___________ (Insert your favorite race/minority/group/etc. here) to die off before they reveal it.

Alternatively, we could use the other conspiracy theory that they know the cure for cancer, but don't want to reveal it because then they would be out of a job.

Because we all know that medical research couldn't or wouldn't switch all those resources to other diseases or problems, right?

Evil fuckin' doctors...

That's good and all.

But that is cancer deaths, not people who get cancer. And I am sure the only reason deaths are down is because people are getting tested more often and early diagnosis is BY FAR the best way to survive cancer.

Unfortunately, the treatments are pretty much the same for most people; surgery, radiation and chemotherapy. And often with HORRIBLE side effects that are in many cases permanent.

IMO, medical science is still pathetically bad at 'curing' cancer.

Good news, however this is due primarily to lifestyle changes. Over 40 years and billions of dollars raised, and few new treatments, almost no new drugs and the continuing death sentences for many types of cancer. I believe this is the conspirancy of all time, to KEEP new treatments off the market.
How can we place a man on the moon in 1969, bring him home safely and still have people dying from cancer at continuing alarm ing rates.
A top Philadelphia oncologist told me,,, "There have been no new cancer drugs for 40 years now."

Thats great I know, you all worked extra hard to get what you want. Now.... Isnt trying and then achieving something better than just taking it?

Lets hope you all remember that next time I set an assignment, now off to lunch and after than Math.
