Once again we had a lot of newbies with under 5 posts enter the contest, but unfortunately I wasn't able to enter them in the contest or give them their free credits for participation. I must admit, I think it's daft about the 5 posts rule. I know the intent : to stop people just signing up to the board to enter the competition so that it's open only to active, participating forum members. But all that happens is you get people joining just to enter the contest, making 5 nothing or rambling posts that contribute nothing (often to the competition thread itself), then they get to enter. I think a number of months worth of membership (3? 6?) and a minimum number of posts nearer 50-100 would make it easier to ensure entrants are actual people that decided to sign up and contribute, rather than just fly-by-nights that think "I want that prize, I'll sign up and make 5 garbage posts, then you'll never hear from me again."

Either that or just scrap the entry requirement altogether and just leave them open to all members because at present the only consequence of it is these garbage posts - "I nearly have 5 now lol" etc. Just a thought.

You should've been around 3 or 4 years ago when the first Miss Thingamabobber contest was won by one of these fly-by-nights. I don't think there was a minimum post count requirement then, and the guy who won everything had like 2 posts. He only signed up because Bree Oberlin, or Rachel Olson, or whatever that chick's name is, recruited a shitload of voters from her website. The fallout from that was epic. It caused complete aversion against the contest for many regulars, and caused many to subsequently avoid the whole thing altogether.

I'm just really curious here so please enlighten me.

Do you guys search for something to bitch and complain about just to bitch and complain? If the contest requirements bother you that much, why don't you search for a board that does it the way you want it run? Or better yet, start your own board and make your own rules and requirements and then you can go and put the time, effort and energy into finding prizes to give away to your members free of any obligation (other than having 5+ posts, that is).

Sorry, it was just a thought. I just don't see what the requirement achieves. I love the board, and it's contests, having won one myself, and make an effort to report spammers/trolls/racists/people posting stolen content or harrassing OCSMs to try and keep it great/clean it up where possible. I was just reading the winners' post and thought "that requirement always triggers noobs posting post count spam" and thought I'd ask. I don't think I'm particularly a bitcher or complainer. Like I say, I love this board and was just trying to make a helpful suggestion to eradicate post count spam.

Petra, I know from a dozen other boards and real world communities that things get discouraging for those who run things and its pretty easy to feel unappreciated especially since we humans are generally a pretty whiney bunch at the best of times, but know this: we members do appreciate it ALL. I belong to a lot of boards, porn and otherwise, where nothing is offered ever, and boy it is nice to see an active and entertaining forum like this. As far as post numbers go, I think I was pretty close to minimum the first time I entered a contest but taking part in it brought me from lurker to member with an astronomical 92 posts. So from that perspective a low contest threshold can encourage participation, and that is a good thing. Anyway, again, thanks, your work is appreciated.
