Tribute to Dan Gurney: 1931-2018

Rey C.

Racing is life... anything else is just waiting.
I didn't put this in the sports section because Dan Gurney was a true American hero, who transcended sports. His dedication, work ethic and engineering skills set him apart from any other racer that I can think of. Maybe, maybe Jack Brabham came close. But in addition to being the only man to win a Formula One race in a car of his own design, Dan also had engineering projects well outside of the racing world.

Although I never had the pleasure of meeting him, I often saw him from a distance at CART races back in the day - which was interesting because he was the author of the "white paper" which led to CART's formation, in order to build American open wheel racing and not have it remain the amateur hour mess that it had been under USAC (course, then we got the IRL and it was back to amateur hour). From all that I heard, he was also one hell of a nice guy. May he rest in peace. :hatsoff:
