Trading Card Games (TCG): Pokemon, Magic, and others

i have something to confess. i am a pokemon addict.

its not easy to be one, but im playing the living shit out of the pokemon TCG again. used to play it back when the first base set came out and picked it back up after a long hiatus about a year ago or so. so, now my D&D meetup players and my girl and i have all got the bug and play a few times a week now.

we tried a few games of magic but im not really into it as much as i thought i would be.


how about you guys? pokemon, magic, something else?


also, i just ordered another theme deck. im doomed.

I was a huge fan/player of the old Star Wars CCG from Decipher. It had a wonderful game mechanic, and the game is still alive all these years after being canceled. I also enjoy the WWE Raw Deal game, it plays so much like a wrestling match and I still play it to this day. Didn't really get into Magic all that much though.

went with a friend to pick up a couple single pokemon cards at a comic store today, and it was a massive nerdfest. apparently, it was yugioh thursdays or someshit. im pretty suprised yugioh is that popular.

i did manage to pick up 2 gothitas for a new pokemon deck im building. i only had two and having 4 is optimum.

i picked up a ton of redakai TCG cards. its a very surprisingly decent game. a shame its been axed. its got really awesome stacking system where the cards are transparant and lay on top of other cards. they are thick plastic too and they have that 3D animation shit to them when you look at them at angles.



the second image shows an attack that was been laid on top of boomer. then a monster is laid on top of that to increase his defense.

Though i like the pokemon card game, i haven't played it in over 10 years. I did play the video games though. I recently just picked up my old DBZ ccg cards. Great game.... to bad score entertainment isn't around anymore/ killed off the game

well shit, i just happened to see some DBZ cards in a store the other day. i bet you they were those ones. i didnt know they had a TCG/CCG.

Oh yea, I used to have the 6-star (ultra rare) level 4 Super Saiyan Goku alt foil version...then I'm pretty sure it got stolen at school.

you can play it online too now. you'll be surprised that PTCG is still going strong. pick it back up. the newer theme decks are awesome. i didnt watch the show after they added to the original 151 pokemon count, but i found out that the new ones really grow on you in the card game. it makes everything new and exciting. besides, all the original are still around.

i dont do to game stores to play, its a little geeky for me. never felt in place at those stores. what i did was find some friends off meetup.com originally for RPGing. thanks to that, my girl and i have 3 new friends who we get together with all the time. we play pokemon and D&D and all sorts of other shit.

my girl and i got our first ever magic the gathering decks.

im playing a swamp/mountain and shes mountain/island. i have to admit, now that we are getting the game, its pretty fun.

The biggest problems with trading card games for me was the cost. They also were never a replacement for good old RPGs. Almost 20 years after the fact I kind of have buyers remorse about all the money I put into Magic the Gathering back in the day. I haven't played it in probably 13 or 14 years. I have played seriously in over 15 years. I still have my collection, a lot of rare early cards among them, in a drawer next to me as I type this. After a while it got expensive dumping that much money to get twelve slips of printed cardboard at a time. (And about 10 of those were either worthless or something I would already have tons of.) Getting four of some important card was a pain, even with trading and buying it individually. I finally realized that paying hundreds of dollars for a viable deck against tournament quality competition wasn't worth it. Finding the game less fun as time went on didn't help. I appreciate the artwork they have on some of them. I also think MtG for giving Wizards the money to buy D&D and save it a long time ago (Before they were bought out by Hasbro and it went downhill again.), but it was just something I had a hard time having an interest in anymore. For it to ever be viable for me the price of getting involved would have to be dramatically cheaper, and that's not going to happen anytime soon.

My old D&D and other RPG books on the other hand I still cherish as much today as when I got them.

I actually got a holographic Charizard in the first pack I ever opened, which was like hitting the fucking jackpot when you're that age. I still have those things somewhere.

The husband and I have loads of our old cards we need to get around to listing out and doing something with. It's the same thing...we played probably between 93-97ish. I'm not sure when he stopped, but I stopped when I graduated high school. Partly because I was too busy with work and college, partly because the newest expansions and rules (i.e. phasing, etc) didn't work too well in combination with older cards.

So now, while I still playing card games, I tend to go for non-deck building types (or deck building types that come as a complete game...nice to have so people who don't own the game can play too). Race for the Galaxy is one of them. All the cards you need come in the box and then if you wish, you can pick up the expansions but if you don't, no big deal.

that damned charizard is still in demand. i never owned it, but my friend does, i think.

i just picked up Orzhov Power intro deck for my second deck.



its safe to say i like the swamps (black), but this one has plains in it now. i have to admit, the angels are pretty cool in MTG.

How many Pokemon are there now anyways? I remember the original 150, and I vaguely remember them adding like 50 more, but now whenever I see one somewhere, it's nothing I recognize.

i have no idea. i think there's over 400. maybe 600.

at first, when they added the first new 50-100 i was pretty pissed. i gave up all things pokemon for years. then about a year ago, i decided to pick up a new theme deck. i realized that it was pretty fun and refreshing having a bunch of new ones. of course, the original 150 are still quite special when you see them. they still use them all the time in each expansion.

yeah, some cards are worth a pretty penny. even these new "EX" pokemon. there are these stupid very rare pokemon called EX that if you managed to KO, you get 2 prizes. personally, i fully believe those things are ruining the game. overpowered as fuck. but yeah, you can open a new pack, and pull a $20 EX like that. bunch of shit if you ask me.

old cards can be worth a bit too, but not all that much. depends. 1st editions, charizards, and all that. some are up there for sure.
