top 25 movies of all time, interesting list

yep that list is pretty shitty, wall-e wouldnt even make my top 500. most of the films are for the older generation so maybe that gives us a clue as to who wrote this list.

I think every movie on the list can be considered great but I think any movie less than 3 or 4 years old can't be all-time great until we see what influence it has and how it holds up to viewing later. That's what makes Citzen Kane, Snow White, @001, and The Godfather(I preferII myself) great.

In 2007, a book was published that compiled a meta-list. The authors Schnelle and Thiemann reviewed more than 60 "Best Movies"-lists and awarded points to the ranked movies on every list. Citizen Kane came in first, then Casablanca, Godfather third.

I couldn't find the exact rankings, only a list of the Top 50 in random order.

2001 - A Space Odyssey *
All About Eve
Apocalypse Now *
A Bout de Souffle

** was in a play of it...still have the red shoes somewhere too!

The Sound of Music? gmafb
Godfather 2 is better than 1. So is Goodfellas.
and..Psycho isn't even Hitch's best film. Vertigo and Rear Window are much better.

You've missed out on seeing some great movies there Hills.

I'm still watching...I'm young yet can't expect I've seen as many as ol man Blue....
What would you say should be my next 3 to see?

^ Much agreed!

Watch the Seven Samaurai. And then the Magnificent Seven. Classic. and another great, not on the list. The entire western genre got screwed, huh.

let's see the pictures of you as Dorothy. woot!

From that list:
The Seven Samurai
The Seventh Seal
Night of the Hunter

i'd also add
About de Souffle
Battleship Potemkin (alert - historic film, watch for musical scoring and accomplishments of directing/filming)

but I agree with bluet, the seven samurai should be your next watch.

Potemkin is one I am yet to see, but its definitely on my radar. But I do agree with A bout de Souffle.

It pisses me off even more than people putting Nevermind number one on an album list.

Hahaha...I have to agree with you on this. As much as I loved Nirvana, there are a lot better albums out there. I always hate how "Smells Like Teen Spirit" gets No. 1 on the all-time 90s videos too.

Back to the movie list though. I find it pretty ballsy to put Citizen Kane No. 5 when nearly any film critic will tell you it's No.1 and probably the most influential film of all time. I didn't think that was even disputed anymore.

I'd like to add one:
Birth of a Nation - silent film, and this one is actually pretty hard to watch. This is a brutal and unsung portion of "progressive" American culture. It is hard to believe that this movie traveled around the country for several years, getting new and multiple showings in major cities (and smaller towns). People saw this as showing the world what was right. Keep in mind, the KKK ride into town as the celebrated, Christian, correct heroes of the day.

We don't often acknowledge that part of our history, but that's America. "Birth of a Nation" is a good reminder of the intolerance that is base to this nation; a reminder that we've made progress; a reminder that we have a long way to go.

okay, I'm not always so blathering. :glugglug:
