Tom Petty vs Bruce Springsteen

Which of their signature songs has the better lyrics?

Well she was an American girl
Raised on promises
She couldn't help thinkin'
That there was a little more to life somewhere else
After all it was a great big world
With lots of places to run to
And if she had to die tryin'
She had one little promise she was gonna keep

Oh yeah, all right
Take it easy, baby
Make it last all night
She was an American girl

Well it was kinda cold that night
She stood alone on her balcony
Yeah, she could hear the cars roll by
Out on 441 like waves crashin' on the beach
And for one desperate moment
There he crept back in her memory
God it's so painful when something that's so close
Is still so far out of reach

Oh yeah, all right
Take it easy, baby
Make it last all night

OR

In the day we sweat it out in the streets of a runaway american *****
At night we ride through mansions of glory in suicide machines
Sprung from cages out on highway 9,
Chrome wheeled, fuel injected and steppin out over the line
Baby this town rips the bones from your back
Its a death trap, it's a suicide rap
We gotta get out while were young
`cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run

Wendy let me in I wanna be your friend
I want to guard your dreams and visions
Just wrap your legs round these velvet rims
And strap your hands across my engines
Together we could break this trap
Well run till we drop, baby well never go back
Will you walk with me out on the wire
`cause baby Im just a scared and lonely rider
But I gotta find out how it feels
I want to know if love is wild, girl I want to know if love is real

Beyond the palace hemi-powered drones scream down the boulevard
The girls comb their hair in rearview mirrors
And the boys try to look so hard
The amusement park rises bold and stark
**** are huddled on the beach in a mist
I wanna die with you wendy on the streets tonight
In an everlasting kiss

The highways jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive
Everybodys out on the run tonight but there's no place left to hide
Together wendy well live with the sadness
Ill love you with all the madness in my soul
Someday girl I don't know when were gonna get to that place
Where we really want to go and well walk in the sun
But till then tramps like us baby we were born to run

There....seriously? LoL if you know the words you'll probably get it better, but listen to it without knowing the lyrics or even just heard it a few times before and it's like what the hell are you saying haha

Are you fucking kidding me?!

That song sounds like someone getting ******** slowly.

My god is he fucking ****!

tom petty, there's waaaay more to music than just the lyrics and to me tom petty made/makes better music.

Anyone who hangs around amateur local musicians knows a Springsteen type - whiny little bitch with about one million songs most of which sound a like and are usually about the same 2 - 3 subjects, usually about the local politics and sub culture. and they too have drawn out long sets simply because its easy to mass produce crap.

Springsteen compares to Tom Petty as excrement compares to cream.

Tom is a true artist looking for a creative outlet - goes from project to project - has a distinct sound yet does a lot with it and most importantly - HE CAN SING, (as opposed to Bruce's yelling) and I can actually make out a few words of the song (where as with Bruce, I actually thought when I was young he was singing in French or French English Basque language.
- When Tom comes on the radio my instinct is to crank it up, when Bruce comes on the radio it's usually "Born to ride", and the only reason I listen is because afterwards the DJs often have a contest where they play a clip of another Bruce song and the first caller to guess what car he is singing about wins something.

Best all time Super Bowl half time show I ever saw.

Added - Yes I know its "Born to Run" but that's how bad Bruce's singing is (add in his favorite subject and out comes the assumption of what was dribbling out his mouth).

I forgot to mention I saw Petty live when he was on tour with Dylan. It was a great show, but not as great as Phil Lesh (Grateful Dead) and Dylan at Target Center. Man that was the best show ever. Still enjoyed the Petty/Dylan show though at outdoor baseball stadium. Warm Midwestern night - it was awesome.

Tom Petty is a nice performer, and he created a lot of nice songs.

But he can't hold a candle to Bruce Springsteen. That guy created so many intense songs and performed them so well time and again, there is no comparison

Let Tom try and do this one as good as the Boss

Oh, I forgot... you want to compare artists by the length of their performance? I was in Lübeck, where Ray Charles did a show. Got pushed onstage in a wheelchair, played 45 minutes. Of course, most artists play 90 minutes or more, but, if you get grade-a quality, even 30 minutes are okay.

The Boss isn't the boss, just like The King isn't the king.
I'm not a huge Petty fan but I do prefer his music to Springstein's. I respect the whole "working man" thing about Bruce, but I've never liked his voice, song structures or the obnoxious brass section of his band. I'm sure he's got some great lyrics, but if I don't like the way they're delivered, then I don't care what they have to say. I can't think of even one song by him that I like, but I like a good number of Tom Petty songs.
