The Rootless World of the Super-rich

Excerpt:

Once, very wealthy people owned big estates in the country. Now they have homes all over the world and flit to and fro in private jets, yachts - or even submarines. Mark Palmer reports

Even before rumours began to circulate that it was haunted, David and Victoria Beckham had never slept a night in Domaine St-Vincent, the estate in Var-Provence they bought three years ago for £1.5 million. This might seem odd for those of us who can only fantasise about a second home in the South of France, but to the money-bags crowd there's nothing unusual about it at all.

"I was at an amazingly swanky wedding in Paris recently," says Stephen Bayley, the style guru and art historian. "With my pitiable suburban reflexes, I asked another guest where he was from. He said: 'I've just flown in from Ibiza. I have a flat here in Paris, but my real home is Rio. Anyway, tomorrow I'm going to my apartment in New York.' Then he added, and this is the interesting bit, 'In this milieu, we don't commit adultery, we travel'."

what the fuck you lookin at?
I don't give a flying fuck about the super rich...If anything I find it repulsive

And thus it begins. Brace yourselves yet another hate filled session of hand wringing, denial, class envy, and self-righteous speech making by those on the left, who hate the rich because they look upon their wealth as something evil...

OK, I find this kind of opulence disgusting and vulgar. I never understood it and never will.

But, with that being said, what of the countless jobs created by this wealth? Sure, the uber-rich own many homes, some they never even set foot in. They own fleets of cars, planes, boats, you name it. And, for each of those homes and each massive garage or hanger, there's crews of people who support themselves and their families maintaining or servicing it.

I'm not defending this lifestyle, mostly because I don't think there's a need to. In a case like the Beckhams, they earned every penny they have. They make other people money and get a significant piece of it. I guess, in a perfect world, they would all donate every penny that can't foresee needing some day, but since that almost never happens, I don't think the idea of providing needed job to many others should be dismissed from the scenario.

I'm not trying to paint some idyllic Reaganesque portrait of the charitable and glorious rich and their trickle down benevolence, but the truth is, I don't see many poor or working class people paying others $25 an hour to drive their limo or wax their yacht's hull. Come to think of it, I can't name a single peer who's ever employed a Cessna captain.

Who but the clueless and mini-minded cares about someone else's life style? So what if someone else has lots of stuff you don't? Good for them!
Go get your own stuff, losers!
When ya got millions and millions, what's a few hundred thou for a good time ?
The really wealthy should be thanked for showing us all what is possible if you make it to any level of wealth...shining examples of the good life.
Yay for people with lots of money who like to spend it!

Just for the legions of simpleminded lurking on the site...this of course doesn't excuse pedos, evil scientists and mad World Conquerors...I am referring to just regular types who like to have a good time and have oodles of cash.
No puppy torturers, etc...same old rules, as always, apply to them.

Another useless F-K post...

From what I've seen out of life very few rich people are decent, hard-working, ethical, moral people that deserve what they have. It's very hard to become rich otherwise outside of dumb ass luck. People that try to be decent find the system is designed to work against them, so most of the time the greedy, shameless, heartless, exploiting assholes are the ones that rise to the top. Either they have to be scum and stomp on everybody else and rig the system in their favor to get their wealth and they don't deserve it, or they got lucky and still don't deserve it. You'll have to excuse me if I somehow don't thank them for the example they give on how to live life.

If we lived in a world where the hardest working people got ahead, if we lived in a world that was ethical, if we lived in a world where everybody got true equal opportunity and a minimum level humanity would let them fall to as long as they gave a reasonable effort, if we lived in a world where nobody got ahead at the expense of others you might have some kind of case, but you don't because reality isn't like that.

Why you take glee of a reality where the slime of the world is pushed ahead of everybody else I can't comprehend.

That seems a tad contradictory. You don't give a flying fuck about them - I would interpret that to mean that you don't care about them, in that you don't think about them one way or the other... But.... you find "it" (them?) "repulsive"?

:dunno:

...and I'm not calling you a lying sack of excrement. No, really... I'm not!!!

;)

No, really though, you have a point. What would be ideal is if we could have just one insanely wealthy couple - kind of like a Bill Gates meets Britney&Madonna couple, THEN we could eliminate unemployment entirely. We could have that one magical power-duo, and then the rest of us could be a grateful working middle class.

I completely agree. People who hate the rich are really sad people. Isn't one of the main goals in life to get rich? Have you people given up all hope of ever achieving wealth? And what should rich people do, just sit around in the USA surrounded by morons? Why wouldn't they fly all over the world and be surrounded by smart people, in beautiful places?

Oh that's just silly. Instead we should regulate how much money Bill, Britney and Madonna make and then we can all vote on what they're allowed to spend their allowance on. I heard that Steven Spielberg has a giant Scrooge McDuck style money bin filled with doubloons...I say we seize it and use the money to fix inner city cleft-palates!

In the meantime, it's good to know that you boycott television, movies, professional sports, music and unneeded technology so the bastard fat cats and celebrities will start having to live like us lowly plebians. I know you have far to much integrity to be part of the problem. You surely wouldn't constantly bitch about the people you spend some of your time and money on.

I'll see you at the iPod, Nike and flat screen TV bonfire!

Trickle-down economics lives! Long live the Betamax!

This article appears to be describing John McCain :dunno:
