The Restaurant Sambo's Was Closed Down Last Year In Santa Barbara

Yeah. No shit. I think they got all ours' closed down in LA by 1983. Obviously there's no one to complain about a restaurant named Sambo's if you've ever been to Santa Barbara. Me and the wife ate Breakfast at a great place called Chad's. Went back to the hotel and the desk lady gave the previous intel. Chad's used to be Sambo's. I was stunned but soon rubbed my chin and laughed into the sky.

I never been there, but have been through the area a million times.

I remember there used to be a Sambo's in Latham, NY, in the 1980s. Same .. "diner-type" format. It either changed its name or closed, too. "Woke" thinking even back then, because of the "racist" connotations associated with the name.

I was going to say, I'm surprised that ANY were open. We had one not a 10 minute ride from home, and I remember eating there when I was like 8 or 9 years old. The ONLY reason I do remember the chain, is because they were under fire for racism, and the trouble my mom and Aunt had, trying to explain to me what and why. I can't remember the food. I was a kid, probably a burger and fries. Funny thing is, after it was torn down, a Duncan Donuts was built there, and it happened to be real close to the city boarder, so you ALWAYS saw a couple of different cities cruisers there. I guess people complained, and the cities banned the cops from taking their break there. 2 weeks later it was robbed at gun point.

I must be missing some connection with the name. Sambo sounds like like someone's name. I'm assuming it can be taken otherwise?

I think it was an old kids book, and there was a character in it they called "Little Black Sambo". So I guess that someone's name would be correct, I'm just not sure about how it al fits. I do know a lot of people were not happy about the restaurants name.

Guess if you're looking for a problem, you can find one almost anywhere. I know sambo as a name of a martial art. I doubt the restaurant would go into business to be twats, but I guess you never know.

Now a days, special interest groups have people that do nothing BUT look far a reason to be bitchy. I just saw something on Yahoo, that claims that Taco Bell but a ^^^ in their logo, and the same for Disney. Every word is scrutinized so they can fit it into an offensive situation, just so they have an excuse to saddle up their high horse.

I AM OFFENDED BY EVERY ONE ELSES OFFENDEDNESS!
