The problem with communism is that it doesn't take into account two of mankinds worst characteristics, egoism/selfishness & greed.

Another problem with communism was the bolsheviks.

(I truly believe we would have seen a different kind of communism had the Mensheviks prevailed over the bolsheviks,since their enitre attitude towards it was different (let's take things slowly & convince the people that our ideas might be right instead of forcing them upon a large majority of the people at gunpoint, which is essentially what the bolsheviks did...)

Most other communist countries were heavily influenced by Russia, even China (although it did manage to develop a semi-independent system, it's basis was still Russian).

I always considered the Mensheviks to be more socialist than communist. Of course, then you have your breakdowns into Leninist, Marxist, and Maoist communism, so anyway....
