The Pacific

The Second-Hottest Man in my Mother's Basement
I didn't see part one, but I managed to catch part two. It seems ok. I wouldn't say it is the best cause I saw one part, but for being another American-centric WWII story, it manages to hold its own alright.

I was just out in the middle of the Pacific......goddamn do I wish I was back there, and not here......

I hate it here. :(

Have you seen Letters from Iwo Jima? That is a really good break from American centered WWII movies. Shows the Japanese in a more of a sympathetic role, well, at least some.

I saw the first episode, it was all right. Like BOB, I liked seeing the interviews with the vets at the begining of the episode.

Yes, I have seen it, and yes, it is a really good movie. Some of the best war movies take place from the perspective of the losing side. Das Boot is another good one.

Seems pretty rushed in comparison to BoB, but not bad by any means... Have yet to see the newest one, but I'll definitely check it out soon as I can.

Lest we forget, the war against the Japanese was also waged on land, in fact many times more Allied and Japanese personnel were involved there than in the Pacific theatre. The Fourteenth Army was called the "Forgotten Army" despite being, at half a million men, the largest single army anywhere during WW2.

BoB dealt with only 1 Company over about 1 year's time (with flashback to training) covering some of the biggest and best known battles of the war (Normandy, Marketgarden, Bastone.)

The Pacific covers 3 featured Marines in two Divisions from '41 through '45. Already in the first 5 hours they have gone from 12/41 to 9/44. The battles aren't as we ll known. Guadalcanal, Peleliu, Okinawa, and Iwo Jima have been the subject of movies but they were done back in '43-'50. The euro theatre movies were done 60-70s (Longest Day, Bridge Too Far, Battle of the Bulge). so there's greater familiarity with the material.

I'm enjoying it, but I'm also hitting Wiki for the background on the battles.

Great show. But I thought Part 4 was a little schmaltzy, but a great series overall.

I haven't been watching HBO nowadays and I missed the premier. Hope to catch up with the later episodes though.

Yeh.. but this thread has more responses now, so the other one is best left to die. I don't think the mods merge threads any more.

Great point!! :thefinger:ak47:

(Bit of a bump :o)

... so I've finally got around to seeing this. So far, I've watched the first 4 episodes.

Really good, but based on what I've seen to this point, Band Of Brothers is better. I don't feel that I know the characters in The Pacific as well.

Great show though. :)

I agree. But I'm still gonna get the DVD box set.:2 cents:
