Yes, religion is a great moral compass, if used as intended. Just as it's not meant for an excuse blanket, it also shouldn't be used as tool of judgement. It simply teaches a set path for everyone and how to keep on the path of enlightenment, righteousness, and positivity in life, by using examples and providing stories of life situations. The morals and teachings ring true even today, and whether you believe they really happened, I believe, is irrelevant. Religion also teaches that not everyone will get it or accept it, and that is their choice. With every choice there is a consequence, especially those rooted in rejection and negativity, as you will reap what you sow. It's a concept and a truth that will never go away.
It's like my grandmother used to say: People don't want to hear about God, but people don't want to go to the doctor either. You'll be going to them before they come to you.
