There is a list put up by a religious organization listing retorts to science/atheism and such; I can't rightly for the life of me remember which organization or where you can find the list (it was mentioned in a book I read recently...likely The Greatest Show on Earth). The amusing aspect about this list is that it grows smaller and smaller as these retorts lose credibility to science. God gets smaller and smaller, and its refuge becomes more of a stretch to pursue.

Do you know why science isn't a religion? That's a rhetorical question. I know you don't.

Science, through the scientific method, is a method of critical thinking. Critical thinking allows revision and new information. Like BlueBalls mentioned, it's through this process that hoaxes are debunked. It's through this process that really any pragmatic knowledge ever gained by mankind, has been. Religion, on the other hand, is a method of believing with nothing to justify that belief. Faith is, nearly by definition, baseless, unsupported.

An example, paraphrased from The Demon-haunted World by another great, Carl Sagan:

Oh I can definitely believe that. When your fundamental understanding of the world around you comes from your particular interpretation of what an old book tells you happened there is no way your theories (if you are going to choose to separate them from what's currently known scientifically) are ever going to be given any credence when compared to what's currently being found and is already known within the scientific realm.

I have been meaning to read that book (although now I'll probably wait for the paperback edition). I much prefer Dawkins when he's discussing and explaining the current understanding of science as opposed to what his stance on religion is - even if that is a slight undertone throughout the majority of his work.
