I played a lot of them, please share your thoughts.
The first breakthrough for me was Baldur's Gate, it was stunningly new and fresh at that time.
Still, the best one I've played (and I believe it's another breakthrough) is The Witcher, released a couple of months ago.
It's unbelievably fun action-wise, story-wise and atmosphere-wise. It's long. And pretty.
It has the best story I've seen so far, very complex, very realistic and definitely very not for children. A lot of alcohol, violence and... sex. You can have sex with many women in the game and it usually brings a lot to the story as it doesn't happen without consequences. Some girls actually compete for you. Others try to manipulate you. And others are just stupid and you can screw them away. I haven't finished the game yet, but it stuns me all the time. (Still, don't get me wrong, sex is by no means the main focus of the game, but it's there, as it's there usually in our lives )
The game is funny sometimes, some dialogues are hilarious, and most of them are very well made, not cheesy and typical, most of the time. When you come up to a thug boss of the poor district and say: "What's up?" He doesn't answer politely, he just tells you to f... off.
I could go on forever about the story. The combat is also distinct, it is not the usual click-and-continue-clicking-until-he-dies kind of thing, it requires some timing and choice of style, some manouvering and strategy, so it's a bit more on the action side than most cRPGs. Love it, although some may say they prefer the typical click-and-watch system.
I can only think of one other cRPG with solid, realistic story which is not so boringly typical and predictable. Fallout. I had recently the chance to compare the storyline and dialogues of The Witcher with Neverwinter Nights 2 (they are supposed to share the same base engine, BTW). Well, here are the conclusions:
NN2 is a game for 14-year olds, The Witcher is a game for a much older and demanding audience. Which is me
Sorry it took so long. Looking forward to you comments/stories.
