Racing is life... anything else is just waiting.
You would be better off buying EPO or learning about blood transfusions. This is based upon the last 15 years of results for the Tour De France top 10 finishers, its obvious its not really about the bike. Even for basic rides around your neighborhood image the few seconds you could shave with a little EPO!

:jk:

Good components are the main thing, shifters, derailleurs, rims, seat, a solid frame. I would go with something with at least Shimano Ultegra groupset or Sram Force groupset, either of those or anything above given your budget and you wont be disappointed. The name on the frame is not as important as the component set IMHO.

You've got a lot of knowledge about bicycles.

Back in college I had a Lotus road bike. Combined with lifting weights, that bike helped get me into the best shape of my life (and then there's now :(). Several years ago I bought an Iron Horse mountain bike. I think I've ridden it about ten times. It's a decent bike... I'm just too busy (or lazy) to ride it. Bikes these days are really advanced and fancy: disc brakes, full suspensions, exotic shifters, carbon fiber and advanced material frames and wheels, etc. How reliable is all this stuff?

Do Trek and Cannondale still make good bikes? Those were popular brands when I was in school. Lotus doesn't make bikes anymore, does it? I think that brand had some association with the car company - but I'm not positive. Seems like when the car company started floundering, the bike brand went away too.

BTW, do you build bikes kind of like some guys these days take components and build motorcycles? Is there money in that?

;) Not really but thanks.

Get out and ride its great exercise and low impact. Get back out and ride! Plus its a great life long exercise (Similar to SEX). :nannerf2:

Yeah lots of gizmos and buzz terms many just for marketing, unless you can spend enough for the good stuff. All the things you mentioned have there place, but not every buyer needs them obviously. Usually the manufactures will mix and match components on consumer level bikes and even on entry level more expensive bikes. What I mean is they throw one or two good components on, say a front and rear derailleur, then skimp on everything else with lesser quality, but then they have something to talk up, etc.. with marketing and sales people.

Most people don't need carbon fiber, or $1000 a piece rims, etc., you can have a $5000-$15000 bike in no time if you want the so called "Best" and brand names on everything. Obviously the pro's can warrant it but your typical recreational rider even when logging thousands of miles, I find it hard to believe its worth it really for most, but many people will argue it is. Sure there are benefits, less weight (ounces/grams) etc.. but I pass people all the time out on the road with $3000 - $8000 bikes and wearing $500-$1000 bike outfits (helmets, shoes, shorts, etc.), on my hybrid (that has some updates) which probably weighs twice as much as there bikes and just wonder why they bother paying all that money if they cant ride it for what its worth or intended for. But I am not about name brands on my underwear or the tags in my shirts or on my jeans either, so to each is own if your into that can afford it. Thats why most the nice bikes you see, are out there to be seen and not really rode as intended. I see it all the time out on the road at bike tours, etc.. If I had the same bike as most people I would own them on the road, since I can most anyway even on my 15 year old hybrid.

Yeah they do but they also do what I mentioned above with hodge podge component sets, so watch out. Your paying for the name on the frame and else where on the bike with any brand, and the more well know brands charge more for the name. They are good bikes and you can find something at many price points for whatever you want. You can probably get more bike in a Cannondale apple for apple I think. But you can also spend out the wazzoo with either as well. I would rather have a top level groupset for components as the first requirement rather than the name on a frame.

I think they just exist for collectors and enthusiasts. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotus_(bicycles) similar to many of the companies that once made bikes, like Panasonic, anyone have a matching VCR and bicycle still?

BTW, do you build bikes kind of like some guys these days take components and build motorcycles? Is there money in that?

No I don't. I dont know if there is money in it or not, you can certainly save now days by piecing things together yourself with online venders and suppliers, but as far as resale to others I am not sure if there is huge markup room left on components to make much doing it when pulling together an entire bike, unless your building your own custom frames then you can maybe market true custom bikes and can gain quite a following if you are known for quality, like most things I guess. I know people make good money who make custom frames, aluminum, steel, carbon, whatever.

Well I don't know about the best but I have a Felt & I love it. :)

Those would probably be expensive (imported) in Finland where the OP lives.

Everything is expensive here, but cycling is not necessarily an expensive hobby.

What could be a better idea than the self made tandem?

All you need is two old bikes and welding gear.
