Such a tough question. The Beatles were more of a "message" band and had a greater impact on society. They also ended up the more experimental of the two. I think the Stones tendency to be fairly formulaic slightly undercut their very considerable talent. Some of the Beatle's music hasn't aged particularly well, but then as BNF pointed out the Stones have been pretty stagnant creatively since the 80s. But, I listen to the Stones way more often than the Beatles, so my answer is...... :dunno:

First of all, I like The Rolling Stones better.

As far as influence though, I think the Beatles had more influence on the world of Pop music and the mainstream areas of society. The Stones on the other hand, had more to do with the shaping of today's Rock music and the world that includes the fans of said music. I think the Stones did not resonate with the mainstream as much as the Beatles and therefore their influence on the world as a whole (in particular, the US-my frame of reference) was not as great.

You guys are making the Beatles sound like pansies. Helter Skelter is the closest thing to heavy metal before Black Sabbath. No one, not even Hendrix or The Who had tried anything so raucous – virtually screaming vocals, over distorted guitars, drums and backing vocals all threatening to drown each other out.

The greatness of the Beatles is that they wore so many hats. They were a boy band, mods, icons of the hippie movement, pioneers in recording, political campaigners, as well as being among the first to incorporate Eastern instruments in modern music.

Absouletely as YMIHERE said they transcended rock and roll and were the poets of the generation more than any other band. They reinvented the sound of rock in many ways also. They paved the way for all the Bristish Invasion bands that followed like the stones, but they were the trend setters and the rest were in their wake throughout the 60s.:)

The Stones are the second greatest rock 'n' roll band ever....exceeded only by the Beatles. They are as important to the evolution of music as Beethoven or Bach....maybe more so. Their influence cannot be overestimated.

the beatles

i like both, but its the beatles who had the biggest influence,in music and society, but both are great rock and roll bands...

best songs;rolling stones=gimme shelter
beatles=sgt.pepper

oh yeah, you guys are debating which band rocked the most, for me its none of the above, the heaviest bands of the 60's before black sabbath were:

jimi hendrix
cream
the stooges
MC5
led zeppelin
mountain

The Beatles are the most awesomest band ever!

LOL ain't that the truth.I can remember how it was even more likely a fight would break out among some of my older brothers age group over any of the british bands vs lets say "The 4 Seasons" who were seen as one of the all american "greaser" type groups.

The Beatles have had more influence on the world then any other band ever. All this in a short span of 8 years max - 62 to 69. The Rolling Stones have made some awesome music, but if you compare their 48 years together to the Beatles 8 years, the Beatles still come out ahead.

I really don't like either of these groups so it comes down to who has more songs that I can actually stand and the winner goes the The Beatles.I personally think that The Rolling Stones are hands down the most overrated band in the history of music.

Beatles songs that I like...
Hey Jude
Come together
Strawberry Fields Forever
All The Lonely People
I Am The Walrus

Rolling Stones songs that I like...
Paint It Black
I Miss You
Can You Hear Me Knocking(by far their best song, imo.Thank you Guitar Hero 2 for making me realize how good this song is)

As you can see,the choice for me is clear.

good point about Helter Skelter, you beat me to it.
It was pretty hard......
Another early metal type song was Pink Floyd's "The Nile Song" in early 1969

Funny how the Early stones purposely copied the Beatles particuarly with Album art. It was kinda like a running gag.
Between the Buttons (1967) looks very similar to The Beatles For Sale. Aftermath was similar to Rubber Soul
Santanic Majesty's Request Is just like Sgt. Peppers.
Beggars Banquet was all white just like The White Album, and also Let it Be/Let it Bleed.

Any Rutles fans here? After all they were the Pre Fab Four http://youtube.com/watch?v=8qf8y7v0WIE

i agree. Can't You Hear Me Knocking, more than any of their other songs, shows what they (or at least that particular machination of the Stones) were capable of when they cut loose and just jammed. i've heard guitar hero leaves out bobby keys' saxophone solo, though. is that true?

Yeah,I don't remember hearing any sax solo on Guitar Hero's version, but the song is still really good though.
