While I believe the article, I can't help but notice that the conference(s) mentioned didn't come with dates, places, venues or participants. Also, we are talking about people that walked into a conference......and had a muffin. If you had been one of them, would you have stopped the waiter to clarify the cost of said muffin before accepting it?
