Taxi Cab Etiquette

It's no too often I have to call a cab for transportation, however yesterday I had to.
To the point, if a cab gives you transportation from point A to points B & C, should you pay what is already owed at point B before you exit the cab?... and then when you return to the same cab, pay for the transportation from points B to C separately?
I thought about this after I exited the cab on Saturday after entering a place of business (my point B), the fact that any lowlife could ditch out on paying his or her fare by simply not returning to the cab. I was going to ask the driver about the proper terms of payment but his english was difficult to understand so I didn't.

Looking back, maybe it isn't such a good idea to pay between points because when the cab arrived to pick me up at my point A, I noticed that the register was set at $3.50 before we moved an inch, having said that, if I were to pay my fare at point B before leaving the cab, it would seem to me that the driver could reset the register charging me another $3.50 all over again for transportation from points B to C (?) Who knows? :dunno:

Anyway, my total fare was $21.00 and I gave the driver $27.00.
Was I cool or what?
