Tag users in threads with notifications?

I would love to have a function that tells me when someone quotes me or to make it possible to publicly address a certain user in a thread conversation.
As I am subscribing for probably thousands of threads I can't keep up checking all answers and replys, but if someone tagged me in an ongoing conversation and there could be another note for that would be awesome. You get my point?

We use VBulletin for the board software and as far as I know this is only possible with a mod which we don't use. We already modified the board a lot ourselves and adding third party mods might break things.

Tagging people is something on the wish list for the new FreeOnes site though.
