for regular posters (not the forum staff), it shows who's helpful and who isn't
btw, why don't you guys make it more useful, like allowing to bid rep on id topics to get them solved faster (and preventing them from getting buried by topics made by people who never help the other posters)?

The idea of rep is that a user can give it to another user if he thinks they deserve it. Not because you think you deserve it.

Rep can be given out not only in the ID section, so you will find people with 100000+ rep who have never solved an ID but have contributed to the many other areas of the forum.
