To take your last point a step further....
Political polarization. It deeply troubles me that so many people see right or left as either inherently wrong or inherently right. They see no middle ground....no shades of gray....nothing redeeming about an opposing viewpoint simply because it may represent a general political philosophy to which they do not subscribe so therefore it must absolutely be wrong and is unworthy of any consideration.
This is the most disturbing trend that I have seen manifest itself in American society in the last 20 years or so. It has been fueled in large part by the media and the explosion of politically-oriented programming on radio and TV. We are therefore driven to believe that there are more things that divide us than unite us when, in actuality, the reverse is true.
It is an extremely destructive element of American society in my opinion.

That's very true. Our country divides itself when it comes to politics. Ironically, I thought that politicians were supposed to be helping our country come together, as one...hmm.

I'd also like to add the freedom of speech thing in the aspect that some think it means one can spew off any idiotic or irresponsible remark with absolutely no consequence.

I was looking at how white chicks react to guys today. They tend to ignore me, look almost diffident. I have thought it is me, until I notice they - and by they - I mean almost all girls at College - ignore the guys. The White guys to be specific. The Black men, they almost fall over themselves to garner their attention.
They pay close attention to what a brother is saying, laugh easily around them, walk up to them and embrace them regularly.
When I try starts a convisashun wit da brutha, I gets looked at funny by dem. (Da brutha's). Usually I hear how they f**#!2*k hate the mofo's who efing do such and such et effing cetera. One told me how his friend would kill without hesitation. They talk about their drugs, their endless demand for respect, talk in some pathetic rap song talk, and other such fascinating topics.

Also, people are seriously into themselves. I have tried time and time to chip into a conversation either to be ignored while the groups yell on about their stuff. You don't shout you don't get heard. And don't even try talking about anything remotely different than cell texting or something.
I constantly feel secretly and overtly people are really only interested in 'making money.' There is no other motive for them to interact with each other.
Jees I miss a good old South African lekker get together and braai. (BBQ).
Talking about....it is a freakin' joke how people here have zero, and I mean no, none, nada, knowledge about S.A. They all have an opinion which they vociferously shout leaving a split second tofor me to correct, in vain.
But you know what? I was looking out at the American flag fluttering in the wind, and feeling glad and proud.
