Have any favourite seat of your pants repair jobs? Any surprising outcomes, good or bad?
Had a hundred year old square metal case door latch assembly with skeleton key lock that a metal coil broke inside of it. On disassembly realized it would have to be custom made, out of desperation I tried stuffing in the spring from a ball point pen, and put it back together. Thirty years later that damn thing is still working.
A customer had an industrial marble cutting machine, the software would only run on windows 3.1, the custom communication ports required real not a virtual machine. The company that built it went out of business, and cost to replace was in excess of $100,000, the computer motherboard died, but the machine itself was fine. Had to scrounge used parts from a computer that had been in my closet for 20 years, and solder the communication ports on it. First time I ever sold used computer parts, and it is still running 5 years later.
Never had any really bad results yet, shorted out some electrical components, but no fires yet, just smoke.
