Star Wars - The Most Popular Movie Ever?

I was just thinking about this.

Is Star Wars the most popular movie ever made?

I mean, I don't think there has ever been so many internet parodies, "remakes," Stormtrooper pics in various situations, gifs, or merchandise, even the Star Wars convention, from any other movie that I can think of. This movie was made in 1977!

At the time when I waited four hours in line with my brother to see this movie, I did not know that it would still be as popular today as it was that first day in '77.

It is still a great movie.
I enjoy the Star Wars stuff that makes it on this forum, also.
Check out the silent movie in the Funny section.

Yup, so go buy some flannel shirts, grow a bubble chin and take notes when you watch Kurosawa films. You too can be a hack billionaire!

It will be interesting to see if either the Lord of the Rings movies or the Harry Potter movies age like Star Wars did. I think (and I'm too tired and lazy to double check this, so suck donkeys), that both have made more at the box office than Star Wars, but really that's not a measure of how popular a movie is over the long term...

I think Star Wars may still hold the edge for now...

I will agree with that. Star Wars changed the movie industry forever. I do like LotR better, story wise, but the original Star Wars movies were so well crafted and filmed that they really set a standard for movies.

Star Wars will always be the most famous movie of all time. Lord of the Rings is great don't get me wrong. But we are only 10 year removed from Fellowship of the Ring & its not woven in the fabric of pop culture like Star Wars is. People don't quote lines from LOTR on a daily basis like ppl can with SW. I think sombody should go to Times Sq. on a Saturday night & hold up a picture of Darth Vader & Gollum to see what character ppl know more. I would be my life that more ppl know DV.

Star Wars set the stage for special effects from that point on. I still remember the first time seeing the Imperial Star Destroyer fill the screen. It felt like it took 10 minutes (at the time). There had been nothing like it, or the other effects, before that. After that, cheesy was cheesy and there was no hiding it.

As someone who read LotR, cover to cover, at least 75 times (+ appendices, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion) before the movies came out, I was disappointed. They deviated too much from the books and took way to many great moments away from Aragorn (and others). And with Jane Seymor still looking good, why they cast Cate Blanchett as Galadriel is a mystery to me. Whew, it feels good to get that off my chest.

"Hidden Fortress" reference... Kudos.

And as far as world wide recognition of a film and to answer the OP question... I'm inclined to believe, yes.

When it comes down to it, either The Godfather series or Star Wars are the most referenced movies of all time, I'd put good money down on that

You're right, but I'd put good money down on the idea that the OSW Trilogy has been viewed by folks 10 to 1 when compared to The Godfather Trilogy...or Godfather 1 and 2. Sadly.

True. That would be interesting to find out, if there was an honest way, what movie has been viewed the most times

What do you mean "movie"? If you are talking about the documentary Star Wars, then yes, I would have to agree that it is the most popular.

Just like Space Invaders. Everyone kept telling me it was just a "game". Then Independence Day came out. Now who's laughing?

I'd say Star Wars is very popular and up there with the most popular. However, if I had to choose the most popular movie or all time, I'd choose The Wizard of Oz. I don't even like The Wizard of Oz.

While I do like the Wizard of Oz, Star Wars beats it, popularity wise, hands down

star wars is the most popular movie of all time.

if you really want to push me ill say its at least in the top 3. but i cant name any one of my friends (mostly guys) that dont rank SW in their top 10 favorites, and highly in those lists ta boot
