Spyware

1. Internet explorer has always been the most bloated, unsafe browser. Unless you count when it was mosaic. Why the hell are you calling me on that? Changing the OS? A program designed to rape a windows install doesnt rape a mac. You dont find adware on a dreamcast or PS3 browser do ya? But that's a bit extreme of a comparison.

I'm not defending IE in the least, I agree with you totally that it's bloated and seriously prone to constant and repeated exploits. But, IE is the most widely used browser and thus the most targeted by hackers, moving to Firefox or Opera does not make you invunerable as most might assume. They're not as popular with hackers as there are fewer users. In fact, at a recent trade show, tech gurus were able to hack into a Mac in hours, while it took over 2 days to hack Vista, and only with the aid of java scripts and vmware and never even touching the core O/s. That's not me defending Vista either. It has to be the slowest, bulkiest, distressed o/s ever.

2. For one.. you have to be licensed to use a car. Any dumbass can buy a computer and spyware it up without real consequences. Not any dumbass can get into a car, crash it up and then ask the officer that shows up.. "hey how do I fix my car and drive it correctly?" Your comparison = fail..

You may have misinterperated my analogy (not comparison) YES, any dumbass can climb into a car and drive. I see that everyday on the roads. And how about little Johnny jumping into daddy's car and plowing into the tree at the end of the lane way? A license has nothing to do with it, my point was that if I buy a car, I'm going to at least learn how to change a flat or top up my oil, not sit by the road waiting for someone to save me.

3. Oh please. As much as I hate with every fiber of my being to say this.. the computer isnt for intelligent people anymore. The same as the nintendo wii isnt a gaming console, it's a CULTURAL SYMBOL. Everybody has one even if they dont know how to use 50% of the possibilities it offers right out of the box. The user doesnt know shit, doesnt know how to learn shit, and most likely doesnt WANT to know anything except how to GET SHIT! 70% of internet usage is for browsing porn and people dont want to defrag their hard drives, foolproof their registry and lock down their program configurations inbetween looking at tits.

Again, I'm with you 100% on that. People plug it in, hook up to the net and what's the first thing they usually do?? click on the
ie_logo-120406x20.jpg
google porn or tits or whatever, then complain their system is acting "funny" or realllly sloooow.

But hey, you know how people learn? THE FRIGGIN' hard way. You can offer them advice, sure. But that's the same as going to american schools. They only keep it in their head as long as they have to. (The test, the finals, whatever) and then it's gone. You wanna be on-call for people, go right ahead. I already put my customer service time in at 2 computer shops and verizon DSL. People dont want an education, they want quick results that ARENT GONNA HAPPEN!

That's the problem....they don't learn, not even the hard way. I've put in my customer service time also (and still do) I spent 8 years in the corporate world, fortunately desktop PC's were not big yet and people used terminals. I had my own business for 5 years where I went to homes and offices bailing people out of shit they had created, only to get a phone call 2 weeks later complaining of the same thing. And blaming me for their stupidity, very frustating. Needless to say I ran as fast as I could to get out of my own business out of sheer frustration. For the past 12 years I've worked in the public sector....while nothing has changed in peoples use and perception of PC's, I have... I refuse to take it seriously, and usually chuckle to myself and just move on to the next nag.

Sorry for the pessimism. Ahem, I mean realism.

realism...you hit that right on the money dude....

Basically my computer now takes 3-4 minutes to start up/shutdown/restart when it used to be seconds. Everything seems to be slower as well. After running scans, I manage to catch a few things but nothing seems to be affecting the speed of the computer.

Free antispyware programs usually don't offer real time protection unless you pay for it, don't forget to scan and update it CONSTANTLY. And remember to always keep your A/V def's current, let windows do it's updates and stop clicking on everything with tits and ass.

That's a two sided sword. Vista took so long to hack because it's such a bloated OS. Vista is bloated in large part due to new security features. The features exist because Windows in general is so easy to hack. While it may seem that the Mac OS is easier to hack, Vista's actually not all that more difficult, it's just going to take a while before the biggest exploits are found.
