Spending Time With Family On Holidays?

I love my family and all but I wish I could avoid a few Thanksgivings or Christmases here and there with the family. Does anyone else dread spending time with your family on the holidays?

Not as a collective group, but in bits and pieces. It's much better to break it up, i.e. see some on Thanksgiving and others on Christmas when you have lots of brothers and sisters with kids.

The older you get the quicker the holidays seem to arrive... before long you'll want to skip out on several of these meetings. :D

Immediate family ok (it's only ever a few hours) but extended family a bit of a headache, I try to avoid large gatherings as much as possible

I'm kinda that way too because I feel obligated to go around the room and spend time small talking with each person, it gets old hearing about what everybody else has accomplished over the years when I can't at least match or exceed them.

Example...
Me to my sister: "Isn't that great, your son is in medical school now!"
My sister to me: "What have you accomplished over the last two years?" :uohs:

My immediate family is over at the hacienda. I'm expecting some extended family from out of town to be here for the weekend. There will be probaly be some other extended family over just for a free meal.

Because I have a few niggling long term medical problems I get the same questions, 'How you doing now?' and the answer is always exactly the same, then you get the superfit uncles much older than me who start commenting you must be making it up as you 'look fine' or it's all in your head etc. I'd say I've been stuck in the same rut for close to a decade now! I also don't want to hear how great other people's lives are going although deep down I'm pleased for them, just I can't tell them anything much positive about mine.

Same here. My bro's fam and in laws come over so I have to make small talk with everyone, it's the same shit over and over again. I wish I could just eat my dinner and watch football in peace and quiet.

^ / ^^ Come to think of it, the relatives I end up small talking with are the ones who have good enough sense not delve into all of the personal things that might be upsetting or make me fell less accomplished than I should be, what am I griping about? :o

All in all, I usually end up sticking with my oldest brother whom I am closest with and have the most in common with...either that or I end up busy in the kitchen, which kills time fairly effectively.

Just immediate family for a couple of hours is ok.
For instance, today I went for a long walk @ my local beach to stay away from them as long as possible and went afterwards to just eat and spend a couple of hours w/ them and bounced.
Too much of other peoples problems is annoying.
