I was pissed Opie was killed at first too, but if you think about it, and the way it's progressed, someone needed to go, and he was actually the logical choice, given the things that have transpired in the past couple of seasons.

Agreed. Opie was a great but his character arc had run it's course.

It will be hard to top season 5. In my opinion, it was the best one to date.

I believe it's Kurt Sutter ( Otto & Katie Sagal's husband) is committed for 2 more years, not the show. I believe I read somewhere that Sutter doesn't want to drag the series out for more then 7 years, but if he can tie it up in 6, he will. We are definitely getting a season 6 though. So if he ties it up next season, he's still under contract with FX for one more year, and if he develops a new show, they could extend his deal. OPr, he'll take the show for 2 more years, and end it there...but he seemed pretty sure, even if FX wanted to go 8 or 9...he would wrap it up in 7.
