Social Media Background Checks - a Reality!

I choose that path. There is no way that any future employer for me could possibly object to any picture of me on the internet, FaceBook or otherwise.

^^So says the guy called lurkingdirk...

l/d doesn't have anything to worry about until he finds out one day some employer was able to trace the person behind the l/d FOs to the person applying for a job then reject your application for having gloyster tendencies. Explain yourself now the 20/20 hindsighter who's going to say to you..well, I would have never posted stuff like that and therefore, 'there is no way that any future employer for me could possibly object to any post by me on the internet, Spacebook or otherwise."

See how this game works now dirk? YOU just happen to not have the potential for boozing pics to haunt your job search while others don't have posts detailing their lurking/leering at unsuspecting women haunt theirs.:dunno:

What if you wrote a pamphlet, book, article, or so on and it was not online or under a pen name? When will they require this information?

I entirely understand what you are saying.

Anyone who has an issue with what I post here is no one I will ever ask for a job. If I were in a position where I needed to work and I needed an employer's approval, I would not post here.

I'm entirely comfortable with everything online about me. Nothing that would compromise me with any future job is online. I suppose I expect the same of others that I expect of myself.

Also, this is not trampling on any rights that people have. Don't put/allow it online if it isn't okay. You have no expectation of privacy if you're in public. Anyone in the world has the right to take pictures of you and then use them as they see fit.

oh geez, i am soooooo fucked lol. the google image recognition app where you can take a picture of an image (say a coworker) and have google images pop up with all the the "similar matches" scares the shit out of me. its going to be hard time for me to transition from porn life to office life when that fateful day comes.

Still you defy the reality most people live with. :1orglaugh Uh, l/d you know exactly the same number of people who would necessarily care about what you post here as some schmuck who happens to run into the zealot employer worrying about a beer can near them on some pic...zero.

Again, you're putting the cart before the horse. Your posts are already here....Of course you can control to whom you apply for a job with but you can't foresee which will have problems with what you've ALREADY posted...sorta like the schmuck who posts goofy pics on Spacebook then later finds out some potential employer has a problem with it. Which rolls us back to my initial point...who takes preventative measures against the unforeseeable??

Ok...:o

No. It's not encroaching on any right. This just falls in the category of willfully paying for something only later to go over the receipt then discover a bunch of excessive fees. As unexpected as they were..you did willfully pay for them and had every right to find the info out ahead of time and refrain from the purchase.

Doesn't bring your money back from getting bilked the first time though does it?

You have the ability to remove anything about you on facebook that you don't like. You can un-tag yourself from photos, and if someone is a dick and won't take a photo down, you can report it and get it removed. I think the best option is the one criminals have forgotten for years- if you're going to do bad shit, don't record it or take pictures. And if you do, by god, don't post them on the WORLD WIDE WEB.

A potential employer can do anything anyone else can do. If someone is considering dating you, but looks at your facebook profile to see if there's anything weird about you, and decides not to date you based on that- why can't a company do that? You doing jello shots off a chicks ass might just turn another gal off. But it can reflect negatively on a WHOLE company, and hurt that company.

Oh, and nobody uses myspace anymore, so no one need worry about that one.

This is all true, however, if an employer googles a potential employee and comes up with nada...what's the point in requesting the info as part of the interview/hiring process? Obviously the potential employee is either keeping it private or doesn't have it. If that's the case, why in the hell would a potential employer need that info? It's about as needful as a birthday and a photo on your resume.

I can see this going to the Surpreme Court in the future because someone can prove they wern't hired for not giving the potential employer access to their social networking profiles.

I don't really think the question is whether there was a reality that an employer or potential employer could theoretically do this and then use it against you..

It's more the fact that the general public is/was probably fairly unaware that it is being done to this degree before stories like this emerge.

Again, it's not just Spacebook and/or Myface...it's that too but also cross referencing the email address you use for other places on the web it's associated with.

I do think Petra is onto something about a potential court challenge though...

Consider this, in most states it's required that you give your consent for a check of your background. Well, background checks investigate information readily available to the public too. So what's the point of background check consent when a potential employer can use your address, email address and name to perform a de facto BI anyway?

But this seems to be just another thing where the envelope is being pushed until it's challenged and the courts sort it out...
