He said his girlfriend was going to "get the needle done". I can only assume that he is referring to Depo-Provera and not the normal pill combination of estrogen and progestin. Depo-Provera doesn't have indications for a number of things mentioned in earlier posts as alternative uses besides birth control. Looking at the list of side effects: acne, cramping and bloating can actually be worse using this form of birth control.
