Smog Check Nightmare

I just got my truck from repair out of the dealer. I had a new battery put in. The new battery erased my memory and I could not pass the smog check. Truck runs perfect but take a look at this checklist they want me to go through to build back the memory to complete my smog check. I have to do it in Los Angeles which doesn't seem like the best idea. I have done everything I have been asked to do. All I want is to pass my smog check so I can get my registration sticker then shop for a new truck.

Anybody know about stuff like this and maybe can advise me how to avoid this obstacle course?

OBD II Monitor Readiness – Drive Cycle GM

The following is the recommended driving cycle for General Motors.
A complete driving cycle should perform diagnostics on all systems. A complete driving cycle can be done in under fifteen minutes.
To perform an OBDII Driving cycle do the following:
  1. Cold Start. In order to be classified as a cold start the engine coolant temperature must be below 50°C (122°F) and within 6°C (11°F) of the ambient air temperature at startup. Do not leave the key on prior to the cold start or the heated oxygen sensor diagnostic may not run.
  2. Idle. The engine must be run for two and a half minutes with the air conditioner on and rear defroster on. The more electrical load you can apply the better. This will test the O2 heater, Passive Air, Purge “No Flow”, Misfire and if closed loop is achieved, Fuel Trim.
  3. Accelerate. Turn off the air conditioner and all the other loads and apply half throttle until 88km/hr (55mph) is reached. During this time the Misfire, Fuel Trim, and Purge Flow diagnostics will be performed.
  4. Hold Steady Speed. Hold a steady speed of 88km/hr (55mph) for 3 minutes. During this time the O2 response, air Intrusive, EGR, Purge, Misfire, and Fuel Trim diagnostics will be performed.
  5. Decelerate. Let off the accelerator pedal. Do not shift, touch the brake or clutch. It is important to let the vehicle coast along gradually slowing down to 32km/hr (20 mph). During this time the EGR, Purge and Fuel Trim diagnostics will be performed.
  6. Accelerate. Accelerate at 3/4 throttle until 88-96 km/hr (55-60mph). This will perform the same diagnostics as in step 3.
  7. Hold Steady Speed. Hold a steady speed of 88km/hr (55mph) for five minutes. During this time, in addition to the diagnostics performed in step 4, the catalyst monitor diagnostics will be performed. If the catalyst is marginal or the battery has been disconnected, it may take 5 complete driving cycles to determine the state of the catalyst.
  8. Decelerate. This will perform the same diagnostics as in step 5. Again, don’t press the clutch or brakes or shift gears.

In a bell tower, watching you through cross hairs.
Personally, I don't know how you can even function in that state. I would have moved to Nevada or Arizona a long time ago.

I have 2 pieces of real estate that I’m holding onto until the stars have aligned and it’s a good time for me to sell. I live in a dirty city but inside of a nice neighborhood. I don’t leave Westwood unless there is good enough reason.

Daystar is correct: Leaving CA is the best option. Think of the taxes you will be saving. At least inflation gives you a reason to raise rents. :)

When I get my new truck my registration fee is gonna be California Crazy.

My income property in LA is under rent control but I will make a killing when I sell as it’s free and clear. Threading the needle with timing and a tax strategy afterwards will be where the thinking goes.

You can still roll into the hood once a month to collect rent. Plus think about how much safer it would be for the ladies in your life.

*I* had a similar issue in NY State. I also did research on it, and accessed something comparable to what you posted. In my case, my gas cap was loose, and it threw a Check Engine light. I had it reset .. but then put my (sports) car away for several months / winter-time. Then in the Spring, I couldn't clear the code / OBD II memory.

Your pasted text *did* work for me.

Today I finally passed the smog check. Total bullshit. I had to drive over 500 miles.

Remember: Never have a new battery installed or unhook the old one before a smog check.
It resets the memory and you will have to jump through a lotta hoops to get it to pass.

Emissions checks are such a scam, at least those required in my area. I once failed an emissions test, and the tech just said "Let me just try that again with some other settings", and I magically passed. I guess I was lucky the tech just did it without me having to grease the wheels, but it shows how flimsy the results are.

I have a friend that has passed many a test, because he put black electrical tape over the light, and they never saw it.

I used to pull the anti lock brake fuse from my old pick up, and forgot to put it back before a test. I put it back in front of the guy, then just told him the truth, I hate anti lock brakes. I passed, and before I left their lot, pulled it back out.

The place I went to was an Israeli outfit so I already had my guard up against any pawn shop bullshit. Since it finally passed I might have been wrong about my suspicions but still feel the exception proves the rule so I refuse to apologize.

This is what I was expecting too...
