Smashing Pumpkins or Nirvana

i like them both VERY much (i have all of their records. ALL of them), but i slightly prefer Nirvana, because all what it meant for us Generation-X'ers

I must say Nirvana are probably bigger outside the US and as a I result never really got too deeply into Smashing Pumpkins.

A tough pic as I think both bands have amazing songs but Kurt is slightly overrated and Billy is slightly underrated. Some of the songs off of Siamese and Melancholy are incredibly well written. The best Nirvana songs are off of Unplugged and they happen to be Meat Puppet covers (criminaly underappreciated band).

Instrumental wise, Pumpkins take it easy. Nirvana had Grohl as there ultimate musician but SP had Iha (awesome in APC), and Chamberlin.

Poetry - Kurt has some amazing songs like All Apologies and was a great poet but so was Billy, tied there.

Great list right there. The more popular songs are better than Nirvana's as well. Zero is one of my SP favs thoug andd Cherub. Plus Kurt has not written a song as good as Tonight, Tonight. Disarm, Today and Bullet.... All amazing.

That is a really tough choice... I love them both and depending on my mood, I'd pick one or the other at any given time. Overall, I think SP's body of work is better than Nirvana's if only because of longevity. But as far as pure impact on music and certain classic songs, Nirvana wins. I have to call this a draw in my book.

For me, it's a no-brainer: Nirvana. I totally agree with the choice to include Billy Corgan (#39) in this list:
