The only real band to lay down the roots of metal as we know it now is BLACK SABBATH, all else follows the same basic chord progression and power chords. Bands like Napalm Death and Pantera etc..have taken that foundation and made it unique to their own. If you listen to any BLACK SABBATH record you can hear the influence they have had on modern metal bands. Slayer I have to say is one of my favs from Live Undead to Seasons in the Abyss true masters of metal. I had a chance to see them in 91 in San Antonio for the Monsters of Rock and they blew me away. Bands that were on that bill were Alice in Chains , Anthax, Megadeth, Metallica it was a great show it probably seems abit Old School now those bands but, back then it was a awesome show. Slayer although really hasn't been the same since Dave Lombardo left to play for Fantomas. Now thats a cool band to check out.....Peace
Napalm Death are grindcore mate. Grindcore had absolutely no similarities with any kind of Metal its in formative years. So are you saying that you can hear a Black Sabbath influence in every modern metal band? If so, I'd love to hear what you can when listening to any Death or Black Metal 
All I'm saying is that Black Sabbath were the first. Slayer is a band that really spawned bands like Napalm Death, Cannibal Corpse and others. Sepultra is another I can think of that took the speed metal to another plateau. But I'm no expert on the subject. Grindcore is just fast metal music, Death and Black metal sounds geek to me,sounds like music to rebel aganist your parents like I did in my youth.....Seeing bands like Slayer and the Misfits in my formitive years was by for the best thing that ever happened to me musically. But now I create my own music so all else pails in comparison to want I'm doing musically.
Slayer had nothing to do with Napalm Death' sound. And considering Slayer formed only 1 year before ND i highly doubt that ND had even heard of Slayer.ptbarnum said:
