Should North America adopt a single cell phone charger standard ?

European Commission demands a single, standard phone charger

The European Commission is getting ready to force all mobile phone companies to use a single connector on their chargers, in order to eliminate the mountains of e-waste generated by switching chargers every time you switch phones. Transformer bricks with esoteric connectors are the most common form of electronic crap I see on street-vendors' blankets around the world (at least a hundred of them yesterday on Brick Lane in London, and literally thousands and thousands of them in Mumbai's Chor Bazaar), and given that they all put out nearly the same voltage and amperage, it really does seem...

no brainer  I have a drawer full of various assorted transformer / chargers and for what good reason ? it's pure waste !
Hopefully most electronic devices in the future will have the ability to charge (mooch) a charge off of the personal computer port, if not, at least try to center around a singular voltage whenever possible.

No more cell phones. ;)

No one needs a phone and a gallon of water on them at all times.

The one and only.
I charge my phone (iPhone) with the same cord that came with my iPod nano four years ago. Evidently, this really doesn't apply to me.

I don't even have a cell phone. I really don't want one either. :hatsoff:

Do you at least have a record player? I mean, how far behind are you technologically?

There's likely no government intervention req'd for this ''imperative'' as the consumers could demand as much uniformity from the manufacturers of electronic goods they purchase, just firing off a few emails to the appropriate corporate locales should work in a pinch. The real challenge I suppose is getting consumers to sacrifice 5 minutes of video gaming or whankin' :rubbel: in exchange for duty emails.
I don't have so much of an issue w/ legislative pursuits, it's the ones by fiat I detest. :hammer:

This is pretty much a no brainer. It has to happen. I plan on switching out of Verizon in a year to get myself an iPhone. I believe I still have 4 cellphone chargers lying around my place.

:gasp: They're socialising the phone chargers!?!

DON'T PANIC!!!

Yep thats the only way it would happen somebody like the govt requiring it.Damn commie European Commission taking away freedoms and rights.:1orglaugh

I simply do not want a cell phone. Everyone I know who owns a cell phone, once it rings they always say something along the line of: Crap, damn it, ah, this phone does not stop ringing, and/or I'm sick of this phone.

Who knows, perhaps one day I will get one.... maybe.

I haven't had a landline phone in years. And I'm with Verizon too - also considering switching for the same reason (I want an iPhone). But I'm hanging on because I got a special deal to stay with Verizon, the service is better that AT&T in my area and the rumors that the iPhone is coming to Verizon next year give me hope. We'll see.

As for the chargers, since there are quasi-universal charging devices on the market, it is odd that there isn't already an industry standard in place.

Millions upon millions of others do though. ;)

I'd like to see it, that way I could forget my charger on a road trip and use a friends.

Exactly :hatsoff:

Just think if gas stations required a "special" proprietary fitting or adapter for each brand of gas :hammer: well, that's how I view this thing, it's just silly allowing tons and tons of perfectly good copper to just go to waste in landfills, not to mention all of the other materials that need not be trashed every time you update a cell phone.

iPhone ? !!!
Who can afford one of those ? !!!

Besides, you should be putting that one hundred and some odd $$$ bill that you will receive every month w/ the iphone and allocate it into your 401K.

Prepaid / pay as you go cell plans work best for me, usually about $40- per month.
