Should NFL Ban Fieldgoals in Overtime?

I think the NFL should ban "fair catches", personally.

I disagree to a point. You know how bad a person can get hurt after being hit like that at full speed? A 250lb person running at full speed has around 1,500lbs of force. I, for one wouldn't want to get hit like that.

What they should ban is QB's sliding to avoid being tackled. That is the most pussifed play in football, hell in all of sports.

I think the fieldgoal in OT should be banned. I agree with the NCAA way, keep playing until one team can't score.

I'm a bit of a traditionalist, so I would say no. Plus, there is always the excitement of it being blocked or being missed. If anything, change the sudden death of it to include a whole extra quarter. So, if a field goal is made that the other team has a chance, but even that I don't think I am totally for. :2 cents:

Yes, I agree.

Can't be the Giants/Bengals.Giants kicked the winning FG from inside the 5 in OT.3-0 now, going to repeat as champs!:thumbsup

Edit: Well you picked a bad example lol. Both teams had ball in OT and as I said Giants were within the 5 when they kicked the FG.
One rule change I have heard discussed is to say both teams have to have at least one possession in OT so that if the 1st team only kicks FG they can lose if 2nd team gets TD.That would put the incentive in to score TD's.

Bucs kicked a field goal with about 5 mins left on the clock in OT to win 27 to 24.

No I don't think so because kickers arent always going to make the field goal so it's not like it's a guarantee win. Also it still take time and skill to get down the field to get into field goal range.

I say yes. why the fuck are they kicking the ball anyway? if I wanted to watch a game where people kick the ball, i'd watch Soccer (aka. football).

actually, now that i think about it, if I wanted to watch a game where they ran the ball in and tackled each other, i'd watch Rugby.

if I wanted to watch a game with stupid rules, pussy stop times and guys wearing pads, and kicking the ball, I'd watch American football.

But what gets me about that is they drove to the red zone then kicked on first down, they didn't even try for a touchdown. And if the opposing team were allowed a possession, they would at least try, as in normal play. But I find the fieldgoal is like a get out of jail free card, giving points for failing to do a proper job.

Another thing I don't like is protecting the QB, that's the job of the defence, not the refs. But I suppose they don't want the star players getting injured before the season gets going.

butters, why you wanna do me like that?

Actually they ran it once, probably just to get the ball on the hash mark the kicker prefers and then kicked the FG on 2nd down.Hey I think they probably could have punched it in if they wanted too they had 1st and goal at the 5 ,the right team won lol.But I understand your feeling about the rule but that game was really not an example of a team that wins the coin toss gets the ball and just drives enough to make a long field goal. The rule to me isn't that important. Both teams had 60 minutes to win the game outright after that the teams know what the deal is ,its fair for both.I was mad the Giants let that game get to OT ,it was suppose to be one they won easy.:D

NFL should adopt an overtime format similar to College football. Both teams should have a chance to score instead of sudden death.

And while we're on the subject. College football should make receivers get two feet down when they catch the ball. Not just one. Just like the pros. And when a player falls on the ground with the ball, in College, he should be able to get up and keep running if no one touches him down. Just like in the pros.

No !

Your teams' field position is earned with hard knocks . . . every inch of it !
Let the offense assert themselves, or not.

I hope that society doesn't follow this path where everything along the way, challenges included, get revised out of convenience.

I like it the way it is.

This is the NCAA where they go into 3 or 4 overtimes before the game is over, they have one period to score and if no one does the game ends in a tie.

This is the pro's, they should be able to keep the other team out of field goal range if they are good enough.

The trouble is that luck; the coin toss; plays a noticeable part with the coin toss winner having the edge 52% to 43% of winning the game.
Now that's not huge, but the college rules eliminate that.

I think they should have the two head coaches wrestle eachother in a pit of poisonous snakes until one of them is dead.

Then, the surviving coach has to be able to kick a 30 yard field goal off of a tee.

If he can't, then the cycle repeats itself, heading down the list (defensive coordinator, offensive coordinator, QB coach, etc) until somebody wins.

If the entire coaching staff dies, then the players have to play a game of duck-duck-goose until there is only one person left. The team that the winner plays for gets the victory.

No, the field goal should be part of the overtime. Granted , scoring a touchdown is more difficult, but the game needs more brevity as it is slow enough anyways.

Absolutely the NFL needs to adopt the College system of overtime. I'm surprised they don't because so much money resides on each NFL game..it's hard to believe that an NFL Owner will be happy to lose the coin toss and lose a game on a field goal.

Other changes-
If a WR catches a ball near the sidelines but the DB/CB pushes him out before he gets his feet on the ground or "possesses" the ball correctly..than that should NEVER be ruled a catch! Why penalize a great defender making a great play? The rules to passing and catching are already SEVERELY slanted toward the offense anyway...

I'm okay with 1 foot required for a catch in college and 2 feet for NFL. NFL WR are supposed to be better than college players and the 1 foot rule helps "little college teams" play with "the big boys."

If a the ball doesn't travel beyond the Line of Scrimmage...it's a fumble. Period. That will eliminate all the bullshit over "in the grasp" and "in the throwing motion" and what not. And it will make screen passes and shovel passes much more interesting. How lame is it for a shovel pass, if dropped by the runningback, to be ruled an incomplete pass? In the NFL? Seriously? How lame is that?

They should make it like college overtime. I think that's a fair system, allowing the other team to match or beat you if you are the first to score.

butters, why you wanna do me like that?

Well sweet Jesus fellas, if you're mean to people you get grounded, that's the rule. :crying:

That's not a bad idea, it might make more coaches behave like Mike Shanahan. :1orglaugh

One more rule change: when the visiting team scores a TD, all of the cheerleaders should remove one piece of clothing. :D

And one more vote for the college system. :wave2:

In the old NFL Europe if the game went into overtime and the team with the ball first scored the other team was allowed a chance to attack and score. This was a slightly fairer way than the NFL way of first team to score winning as NFL Europes way at least allowed both teams possesion of the ball in Overtime.
Thsi method isn't perfect but it is an improvement.
